Prof. Douglass exhibited the phonograph
to a large and thoroughly delighted audience
at the M. E Church last Monday night.
They were highly amused at its performance,
and unanimously voted the Prof, a “brick.”

Mr. J I’. Burford speaks of buying one
of the Clement Attachments and putting it
in operation at Sunny Side next year. lie
has sufficient steam power to run two, and
he may Increase bis investment to that Dum
ber.

than they can be bought at wholesale in
Atlanta.
Crockett’s warehouse has done, and is
doing, more for Jonesboro than any other
enterprise ever started in the place. John
is appreciated by the people of thut thriving
town, both as a cit z.m und as a business
man
Ret S. H. Griffin lays upon onr fable a
niummoth turnip, which i 9 just about the
biggest thing in the way of u vegetable that
we have seen since summer. It weighs 7
pounds, and measures 29 inches in circum
ference.
One of our young men, who about twice
a week directs his footsteps toward Lovejhy
in quest of social pleasure, generally takes a
lantern along to relieve the night of its
gloom. Arriving at his destination he sus
pends the luminary from the gate-post, as u
warniug that none others need apply. It
has its effect.
Mr. G. W. Humphries will issue from
this office Dext week a Christmas Bulletin,
designed for the convenience of those of our
merchants who may wish to advertise their
holiday goods. It will be circuited gratu
itously, to the number of about 1,000. Par
ties desiring space should hand in their ad
vertisements by to-morrow noon.

Tub Brown House telegraph offi -e is now
in charge of Mr. Lewis J. Maxwell, vice M r.
Terrill, of Savannah, who has resigned Mr.
Maxwell has recently been in charge of the
Jonesboro office. He is perhaps the yonng
est operator in the State, hnt is thoroughly
posted, and telegraphs with remarkable
facility. The Brown House office is • great
convenience to That portion of the city, an i

We glean (rnm the McDonough column
of the Jonesboro News the following items :
Col. J Hump Bryans is running the big
gest thing in Henry county in the way of a
saw-mill, down east of McDonough.
Jack Nolutt has beaten the town raising
cotton, lie raised twenty .bales averaging
five hundred pounds per bate, and sold the
most of it for 12 cents, and did it with a
pair of donkeys and three Cushites.
Return day lor equity in the Superior
Court ol Henry was out on the llth inst.,
und return day for common law will be out
on the 21st inst , as the hill providing for
the change ol the time of holding court in
Henry makes the time the second Monday
in January and the secoud Monday in July.
Tits Southern Planter and Fanner, for
December, is ou our table, and we find it a
good number. The leading urticleon “Green
Fallow Crops, Animal Munur< 8 and Com
mercial Fertilizers,” by Dr. K.izey, Editor
of the Slock Department, is of vital interest
to all farmers. The Doctor has also valua
ble articles on Sheep Husbandry, ami many
other interesting subjects. Reports of
Farmers’ Clubs and other articles by promi
nent practical farmers, make The Plan'er a
most valuable farmers’ puper. We coin
in'nil it to the attention of our funner?.

The Auditor’s Court was In session here
during lust Tuesday und Wednesday, ou the
Turner case.
The Cominissionei's Court was convened
again on la.-1 Monday morning lor the trans
action of some important business
The County Commissioners are having the
court-house repaired by having the plaster
ing replaced where it has looseued or fallen
off
The Tiustees have not as yet determined
to employ Oteacher for next year, for the
reason that they have no building suitable
lor a school.
Rev. R. W. Rooess removed from this
place with his family on Wednesday last to
Jackson, where he will reside during his
term of service on that circuit.
The heaviest rain-fall we have had for
rears occurred in this vicinity on Inst Satur
day night. The streams were so high that
many publie brii’g. 1 - and other property was
damaged The bridge over Cotton river,
near Mr. W, G. Turner’s, was washed eulitely
away.
OxHast Saturday n large concourse of
people assembled at this plnce to witness a
horse race, which had been oti the hoards
for some time. A large amount of enthus
iasm was extant upon tlie occasion, and the
crowd seemed gen-rally to erj >y themselves.
We did nut learn the aiuount of the purse.
Jam<h Miller, a young r.inn about twenty
years of nge. happened to a serious accident
here on last Mrmdav morning. Just as h"
was entering town his mule took fright and
ran away, throwing him oat of his wagon
and breaking hie leg just above the ankle.
The wonnd-d limb was promptly reset bv
Dr. C. D. McDonald.
’ Capt. A. C. Sloan wears the blue ribbon
in this district, not in behalf of the Drew
movement, but becau-e be has raised three of
the finest hogs in this county this year.
After slaughtering them the other day they
were placid upon the -cales with the follow
ing results : Number one netted 385 lb->. :
number two 395 lbs., and nnmh-r th'ee 429
lbs. He believes iu home rais*-d stock, and
is classed as one of the best tanners we have
