Mr. B. B. Carmichael contemplates
building an elegant dwelling house on
the Pre-byterian Church lot near the
residence of Mr I hotuas D. Stewart.
It is one of the most elegible building
sites iu town.
We have one of the best county Al
liance presidents in the State, and the
Alliance thinks he would be a good
legislator. He is a gond farmer, a
clear headed business man aud a
Christian gentleman. «
State Lecturer Beck warus the Alii

he thinks will Ire offered them at a
much lower figure than ever before.
Me bids them to whip the fight by let
ting jute severely alone.
Mr. M. C. Lowe is one of the most
progressive farmers in the county. He
has an elegant farm near the Grove,
on which he will plant 400 acres iu
cotton. He cleared thirty per ceut.
last year on his farming operations.
Who can beat it ?
The Presbyterian church, as it nears
completion, exhibits an ornate style of
arctiitecture not heretofore undertaken
iu the borders of the county. It is a
most excellent temple and fairly ex
presses the devotion of its tncmbeis to
the cause of the Master.
They have a plasterer engaged on
the Presbyterian church, who is by all
odds the fastest mud dobber that has
ever been iu this town. It is not too
much to say that, if he had the azure
vault of heaven lathed he would plas
ter it in one day and have time to go
tishing in the afternoon.
The Farmer’s Alliance has determin
ed to build a ware house at Me Den
ough; they have a proposition from
the East Tenn., Va. & Ga. R. R. for
a buil ling site aloug their right of way,
but they are waiting to see what the
G. M. & G R. H. will do about build
ing their road to Athens. If this is
done they think of building o\er in
town.
We are pleased to note at the re
cent Quarterly Meeting of the county
Alliance that they all entered on the
Alliance work with zeal and determi
nation. It is uow plain that each in
dividual Alliancetnau has made up his
mind to enlist for the war. The order
now numbers its millions, and each
member feels that he has a duty to
perform.
It is the unlooked for that always
happens. Most people thought that
Tom Shaw would be cleared at the
last term of Butt’s Superior couit and
thai Dolphus Welch would be convic
ted, but it turned out that Mr. Welch
c-ime clear and Mr. Shaw only got a
mistrial. Mr. Welch had some tlue
legal taleut engaged, and they left no
stone unturned in his defense. The
state failing to convict Mr. Welch vir
tually', aud the prosecutions against
Shaw, Willard and Yancey.

Uncle Johnnie Copeland tells a good
one on Mr. W. L. Kimltell Just af

thinking it a good chance to have some

j The old gentleman sain, impatiently.
“Take it out. and |ut the si oe on."
The boy pulled out the pair of baby
