Commencement Kxercises.
The commencement exerciser began
Sunday. The sermon was preached
bv Rev. 1. R. Brauhant, of Atlanta.
The man of God seemed to have been
in one of his best moods, for his deliv
ery was supeib and his impassioned
words fell up his immense concourse of
hearers with pleasing and peculiar
force.
The exercises for Monday began with
primary and freshman declamations. It
afforded the spectators much pleasure
to witness the earnestness and thoi -
ougli preparation of those little t. ts.
They acquitted themselves well.
The contest for the junior medal for
best declaimer was the absorbing event
of Monday niglgj. The contestants
were numerous, and determined. All
evinced a thorough training a native
aptitude for the task in hand. The
contestants were zealous in tlmir own
behalf, and each one appeared deter
mined to carry off the coveted goh.en
prize. But it.- was for Miss Nettie
Campbell, the bright and vivacious
decla nier to win the medal.
T uesday morning’s exercises began
with sophomore declamations Some of
the brightest, young minds *ot the
school iutered this contest, which was
snirited and entertaining. Among
those embryo orators one c ut d discern
oratorical talent that promises one dav
to make < lay, Calhoun and Webster
lay asitlc the mystic veil of the Iteyond
and listen to these, their apostles, with
admiration. The prize was taken by
Lizzie Nolan.
Miss <’ornelia Orr reflected much
credit upon herselt, as a calesthenio
drill master by, the perfect display of
her calisthenic pupils in “the Wand
Drill.”
Ihe prize fot primary spelling was
awarded to Tiny Maxwell. Many c m
testants for the prize did well, aid
among thosu was honorably mentioned
Lizzie Nolan.
Among the most entertaining exer
cises were of Tue-dav. in which the
contest or the medal in spelling in the
higher or dictionary clais. There was
perhaj s never a lietter corps of spellers
in the town than was arrat ed»on this
occasion. The prize was awarded to
the beautiful and set oniplislied Miss
llirdie Daniel. The most remarkable
record made for the term was that of
Miss Lizzie Dicken, who did not miss
a single word during the term, and for
which she received a handsome prize
from a friend, whcli was publicly
awarded.
Honorable mention was made of Mr.
Ernest Sm<th and Mis* Lizzie Dicken
in this counec ion. Honorable men
tion was also made o* John Stipe, Tiny
Maxwell, Nolley Resgan, Clarence
Westbrook and Pearl Walker.
Carry Lucy Dailey received the
prize for the greatest improvement in
pennman-hip.
The closing exercises of Wednesday
were well attended. The orator of the
day. Rev Sassnette, of Atlanta, deliv
ered a splendid address to the school,
which was fraught genius thought,evol-
Ved from a profound miud. Ilis In ar
ers wee enraptured wi'li his sublime,
oratorical (lights and puisant tru hs
that forced conviction the selection
of an orator was indeed a happv one,
and we congratulate the revert nd gen
ilemau on his splendid effort and the
people of the town 'or having sne'i a
treat given them.

day’s exercises were perfect hoquets of
thought, and each young lady deserves
great credit for the able manner in
which she handle! her several sub
ject.
Closing scene was the awarding ol
prizes by Col. T. C. Nolan, who in a
neat fifteen minutes talk endeavored
to soothe the disappointed hear.s of
those who failed to take the prizes
His mithological illustration was one of
the happiest effoits of his life, of winch
there are on record some very brilliant
ones.
Iu conclusion, too much cannot be
said of l’rof. Parker, by way of com
mendation. Beginning the school late,
and a time when it was thought there
could be but a poor school got ten at
best, this able organizer and competent
teacher, took charge of the school, and
by superior tact, energy, determination
wrought the brightest success out of a
chaotic confusion begotten of former
management and want of uninimity of
sentiment among the patrons. The
school opened with less than forty pu
pils and closed with one hundred and
twenty. This speaks louder for Pro
fessor Parker than the praise of friends,
for the public knows, “nothing suc
ceeds like success.”
We have endeavored, in a general
way, to notice everything that trans
pired ai the exercises, and if we have
omitted anything it is not intention >l,
but because of a failure to remember
it.
