A Pure Baking Powder.
A baking powder that can be de
pended upon to be free from lime and
alum is a desideratum in these days of
adulterated food. So far as can be
judged from the official reports, the
“Royal” seems to be the only one yet
found by chemical analysis to be en
tirely without one or the other of these
substances, and absolutely pure. This,
it is shown, results from the exclusive
use by its manufacturers of cream of
tartar specially refined prepared
by patent process which totally re
moves all impurities. The cost of this
chemically pure cream of tartar is much
greater than any other, and it is used
in no baking powder except the “Roy
al,” the manufacturers of which con
trol the patents under which it is re
fined.
Dr. Edward G. Love, formerly ana
lyt'cal chemist for the U. S. govern
ment, who mada the analysis for the
New York State Board Health in their
investigation of baking powders, and
whose intimate knowledge of the in
gredients of all those sold in this mar
ket enables him to speak authoritative
ly, says of the purity, wholsomeness
and superior quality of the “Royal”:
“I find the Royal Baking Powder
composed of pure and wholesome in
gredients. It is a cream of tartar pow
der, and does not contain either alum
or phosphates, or other injurious sub
stances.”
Prof. Love’s tests, and the recent
official tests by both the United States
and Canadian governments, show the
Royal Baking Powder to be superior
to all others in strength and leavening
power. It is not only the most eco
nomical in use, but makes the purest,
finest flavored and most wholesome
food.
Fatal Fight at a Fire.
Deadwood, S. D., Oct. s.—The Bap
tist church here, valued at $12,000, was
destroyed by fire, which iR supposed to
have been the work of incondiarios.
During the fire a fireman named Clem
Spurling and a physician named Naul
teous got into a fight, in which the phy
sician got the worst of it. After the
fire he armed himself and, meeting Spur
ling in a saloon, resumed the quarrel
and was knocked down. As he arose
he pulled a revolver and shot Spurling
twice in the body, killing him. The
murderer now lies at the point of death
with brain fever. The excitement is
intense, and the firemen threaten to
lynch the physician. He is in jail sur
rounded by an armed guard. Naulteous
is a bad man, having, it is said, killed a
man at Hastings, Neb., before his re
moval here.
George Klentz. of Wichita, Kas., ended
a spree by hanging himself.
A starving mob of poor people at Morlia,
Mexico, raided the city’s feed .tores ill
search of food, and, in spite of bullets
from the soldiers, got what they were
after.
Justice Ingraham, in the court of oyer
and terminer, New York city, sentenced
Burton C. Webster, murderer of Charles
E. Goodwin, to slate prison for nineteen
years.
Edward S. Dann, wrecker of National
Savings bank, Buffalo, died Sunday night
of opium poison. It was suicide. Danu
was to have appeared in court Monday
for trial.

A gentleman from St. Louis,

curative virtue of Dr. John Bull’s

suffered from weakness and became an
invalid. No medial treatment seemed
to benefit her. and she had poor health

Fortunes pj Farmers
Ho ! for Florida —the Healthful, Sunny Land where Far
mers are now making Irom $250 to SIOOO per acre, rais
ing Vegetables and Fruits for northern and local markets.
Crops nuule in mid-winter, and the products sold at enormous prices. Lands make
from 150 to four hundred bushels of tomatoes per acre, which sell at $4 to sfi per bushel;
from 400 to 700 bushels of onions, which bring from $2 to $2.50 per bushel; SIOOO per
acre made on pineapples; S7OO on an acre of strawberries. The farmer is only engaged
five months in the year making his crops—-and those five months when the weather is
soft and balmy. For seven months he has the pleasure of fishing and hunting. The
streams are teeming with the finest fish and the forests abound with ull kinds of game.
Quoting from a letter written to myself by Mr. D. R. Bivins, formerly of Hampton,
now ot Bartow, Fla., he says: “I have been here for a number of years, and know this
to lie the most healthful climate in the world. People afflicted with all kinds of diseases
come here, and oar climate is a panacea for all their ills—they come sick and go away
cured.” The same authority says a neighbor of his sold S7OO worth of strawberries from
an acre. Another sold $450 worth of onions from 3 4 ' of an acre. And again a gentleman
engaged in raising tomatoes sold SSOOO worth from 10 acres this season, and has a con
siderable number yet to sell. Mr. A. A. Subors, agent of the Ga. So. & Fla. R. R., in.
formed us that last season a friend of his sold S7OOO worth of truck from 20 acres, and
that some acres in pineapples brought $1000!
Fellow sufferers, this heals raising (i cents cotton. Here you work twelve months
and barely “make buckle and tongue meet.” You work hard, live hard, and it’s a foot
race between you and “Hard Times” to keep out ot deist. In Florida your work is light
and pleasant. In five months you have made your crops, sold them and have the money
iu your pocket. Then you have the balance of the year to devote to pleasure or amuse
ments—fishing, hunting, boating, etc.
The Associated Railway Land Department ot Florida is now making the unprecedented
ofler of 17,0(111 acres of the finest timbered lands (wiil cut from 4000 to 5000 feet of lum
ber per acre; in one of the best counties in Florida, below the frost line, at $5 per acre;*
cash, balance in 1,2 and 3 years. This section is just now being opeued up, and is
what is known as the Manatee country. They are located from 7to 10 miles from the
Gulf of Mexico, and on Manatee river, a navigable stream. Taken altogether, it is one
the finest bodies ot land in Florida, both for fruit growing and vegetable raising. As a
stock range it has no equal, growing grass luxuriantly the year round. It is no unfre
quent tiling to see from 250 to 1000 head of sleek, well bred cattle in one herd, and 150
to 500 horses in a bunch. These lands are now coining prominently into the notice of
southern farmers. They begin to recognize that they have slept over their rights, and
ave let the shrewd, industrious Yankee go iu and reap a golden harvest before they
knew a vast store of latent wealth was being mined by these astute people.
Being but recently commissioned by tlie laud company of Florida, 1 have had time
only to see 75 or HO good Henry county farmers, who signify their determination to hay
some ot these valuable lands. Let enough of Henry county people take (his land at
once, for if we fail of this chance, it is the last to buy cheaply. Should a colony of Hen
ry county people—say 150 or 200—buy these lands, as soon as the bargain is closed they
will advance 100 %. And when they locr.te it will be worth SSO per acre. There are
enough valuable pine lands on it to pay for it twice. The same quality of land in Polk
county near the railroads is worth from $25 to SSO per acre. Lands inferior to these in
many respects, and in no sense superior, in Southern California, are worth SSOO per acre.
The Florida lands have many advantages over Southern California. Firstly, vegetables
arc gotten into market li weeks earlier in Florida than In Southern California. Second
ly, the freight rates of California cat up tiie profits of the truck farmer, having to ship
2000 miles. The Florida truck farmer pays only nominal freights, having both rail and
water transportation. Thirdly, the California lands have *o be irrigated, while those of
Florida are spriukled by nature’s water pot—rain.
It will be my pleasure to give any one desiring information relative to these lands
all the knowledge necessary to a proper understanding of where they are and their capa
bilities. I have a large number of Florida land map folders, embracing a vast amount
of information relative ro the State, also one of the best maps of the State ever gotten
up for distribution. I am authorized to sell valuable lands in 1)1) different counties of
Florida. The tract above described being in my opinion the best bargain, I have men
tioned it more particularly. Ca[l on iH. SPIIF.K, Salesman,
Associated Railway Lend Dep’t of Fla., McDonough Ga.
*The above lands were originally intended, as shown bv the Loud Co’s schedule, to
sell for $5 per acre, hut was printed $3 per acre, by an oversight of the printer, which
as subsequently detected —tEd.
