Mr. Smith’s Law Practice.
In reference to the law practice of
Mr. Hoke Smith, the Washington cor
respondent of the New Tork limes
quotes a close friend of Mr. Smith as
saying: “I know that last year he col
lected over $37,000 as the proceeds of
his law practice. He has made a spe
cialty of damage cases and'is widely
known as the anti corporation lawyer.
There is not the least doubt that, if he
were to devote his entire time
to the practice of law, his yearly
income would amount to more than
that which the President of the 1 nited
States receives as a salary.”
Society’s Latest Caper.
The only imported Japanese poodle
in New Y'ork, says a city paper, cele
brated her birthday a few days ago by
an afternoon party, 'l’he invitations
were in Japanese on one side of the
heavy cards and English on the other.
The poodle’s name is “Ootab,” and
she alluded in the invitations to her
owner as “the person with whom I
reside.”
The aristocratic dogs invited were
all little perfumed pugs and poodles
except one spaniel.
The servants were men in Japanese
costume. The elegant refreshments
were served on tables six inches high
There was chicken salad aud ice cream
on the bill of fare.
The ladies dressed to match the color
of their various pets and held them
with silver chains.
After the little dogs had been served
with dainties the ladies and gentlemen
had punch and cake.
What abused things society does in
in the name of entertainment. No one
at this party of poodles noticed the
beautiful little son of “Ootah’s” mis
tress.
The richly dressed ladies sat on the
floor to feed the dogs, caress them and
delight in them.
Dogs that could not come acknowl
edged their R. S. V. P. obligations by
sending presents with regrets.
A poor old woman on the Sidewalk
coummented on the affair, "a (log par
ty, is it ? Glory to God, but they must
have little to do!”
“If I ain’t a good sou,” said the
erring youth to his father, “it’s your
own fault. ‘Just as the twig is bent
the tree is inclined.’ ”
“To some extent, my son,” replied
the father, “you ure right. You have
not been bent sufficiently, hut it is not
entirely too late, even now.”
And he bent him across his knee in
the good old way and inclined tis hand
unto him powerfully several times, in
about the same style as of old.
J. Sterling * Morton will enjoy the
distinction of being Nebraska's first

What Makes the Difference?
Wheat and weeds grow in the same
same soil and under the influence of
the rays of the same sun. Why wheat
and not weeds, and why weeds aud not
wheat? What is the cause of the dif
ference? Is il to be found in the soil
and in the sun? No, but in the char
acter or the nature of the seed sown.
Clay hardens aud wax melts under the
same influences. Why? Because tie
difference is found in the fact that the
condition of the one substance is differ
ent from that of the other.
Evaporation of moisture hardens the
clay, while latent heat in the wax ex
pands the particles and causes them to
run. Why is it, reasoning by analogy,
that under the same divine influences
the light of the Sun of Righteous
ness aud the warm and genial love of
God—while the heart of the believer is
softened, the heart of the unbeliever is
hardened ? Because the believer yields
to the divine influence—yields to the
will of God—while at the same time
the incorrigible resists the divine influ
ence—resists the will of God—resists
the truth.
