SENSIBLE. FARMERS.
They Will Take In the Situation as
Here Presented and Profit by It.
The Arkansas farmers, in a large
and representative convention, have
determined to reduce their cotton acre
age and have pledged themselves to
abide by this declaration.
The convention went further and
advocated, in the strongest terms, an
increased diversity of crops as the best
means of improving the condition of
the southern farmers.
It would profit the farmers of Ar
kansas very little to reduce their cotton
acreage if the farmers in other states
should plant as much or more cotton
than ever before. But the Arkansas
convention will have its effect in the
direction of general shortening of the
crop. This convention asked for an
interstate convention to speak for the
whole south, and such a meeting may
be held soon.
There is no doubt that the southern
farmers have been doing a good deal of
thinking on this question recently, and
we may reasonably expect good results.
We commend these words of wisdom
from the New Orleans Times-Ilemocrat
to the farmers of Georgia:
“Some of these sensible southern
papers are calling attention to the fact
that the arguments in favor of a re
duction in cotton acreage for the com
ing season are increased by the pres
ent high price of food products, Pork,
which constitutes one of the principal
elements of southern plantation sup
plies, is higher than it has been for
years; and the indications are for an
advance in beef also. There is every
reason, therefore, why the southern
farmers should put more land iu food
crops and reduce their acreage in cot
ton for the price of the former is high,
aud that of cotton will bo very low if
there is heavy planting.
“Could the southern farmers Jo
worse than to grow a big cotton crop
this year ?
“It will probably cost them more
per pound to raise cotton than forsomo
years past, because of the high prices
of pork and other food productions.
Cotton raising has been somewhat dis
couraging for the past few years, and
has returned little profit because of the
low price prevailing for the staple. If,
in addition to that low price, the cost
of production is increased, it is easy to
see that the farmer will be in a worse
condition than ever.
“There are, therefore, two argu- 1
menta against a big cotton acreage, the
low price of the staple, the high pi ice
of provisions. The latter is further
argument in favor of increasing the
acreage in food crops. During the war
the south raised its own meat and bread, i
although nearly all its able-bodied meu
were in the field. It can do so to-day
with profit aud advantage. The mar-1
ket quotations, not of cotton alone, !
but ot all provisions, are a strong ar
gument against a big acreage in the
southern staple.”
Ills Statement Was Correct.
The prisoner at the bar was charged
with assault aud battery by his wife.
She was a little woman, but wiry and
energetic. He was a strapping big fel
low, and on him the judge frowned
fiercly.
“So,” said the court, “you have been
assaulting jour wife?”
“Yes, yer honor,” admitted the pris
oner, doggedly.
“Well, you ought to be ashamed of
yourself.”
“I am, yer honor.”
“The very idea, sir, of a great, big
fellow like you are whipping a little
woman like that.”
The little woman flushed up, but
kept still, with eyes fixed ou her hus
band expectantly.
“I didn’t whip her, yer honor.”
“Didn’t whip her,” exclaimed thw
judge. “Dou’t lie to me, sir. You did
whip her.”
Agam the little womau turned her
eyes ou her husband.
“Beg yer parden, yer honor, but I
didn’t whip her. She licked me iu
about three minutes, aud that’s why
I’m ashamed of myself, yer honor.”
The judge fairly gasped.
“That’s right, yer honor,” put iu
tbe little woman ; “Henry gets ugly
sometimes, but he won't lie when I’m
watching him.”
The judge took a good long look at
both of them and then dismissed the
case.
