at a Distance.
JCr ory one who is interested in pho
tographs of outdoor scenes—and who is
not?- must often have wished for some
satisfactory means of obtaining larger
pictures of distant, unattainable objects
tlian can be got with an ordinary cam
era. The writer of this remembers with
keen regret that the lack of such an
instrument or device prevented him
from obtaining some most desirable pic
tures during a visit to the Yellowstone
park.
l'or instance, many mud swallows
build their nests under the projecting
ledges of the “Liberty Cap” at the
Mammoth hot springs, and sitting in
the open doors of their habitations they
gaze down upon the spectator beneath
with the indifference of conscious se
curity. With a camera that combined
the powers of a telescope and a photo
graphic plate a most pleasing picture of
these birds, showing them apparently
close at hand, could have been made.
Such cameras have been devised, but
it is only quite recently that they have
assumed a fairly satisfactory form.
3'hc desired result is brought about by
■means of a peculiarly-constructed lens,
consisting of a positive lens in front and
a negative lens of much shorter focal
length in the rear. This gives an image
several times as large as that obtained
with an ordinary camera.
With such an instrument photographs
of birds and other animals which can
not bo approached closely can be made,
showing them in their natural attitudes
and of a sufficient size to exhibit their
characteristic features. It is also sug
gested that this method of telephotog
raphy will prove useful in astronomy.
MAMMOTH SAUSAGES.
On. Tliat Required the Services of Nine
ty-One Men to Carry It.
In former times it was the custom in
many German towns to manufacture
sausages of enormous length, and carry
them on festive occasions in solemn pro
cession through the streets. On New
Year's day in 1558 a giant sausage 198
ells in length was carried in triumph
by forty-eight persons. Hut in the year
1583, according to a German paper, it
took ninety-one persons to carry a sau
sage 59(1 ells long and weighing 434
pounds. The chronicler of the period
says: “The butchers’ men were all
neatly attired in white blouses. The
first man wound one end of the sausago
several times round his neck with a por
tion of it hanging down in front, the
rest followed at equal distances carry
ing the trophy on their shoulders, and
the last one had the other end wound
round his neck like the man at the head
of the procession.” In the year 1001 wo
are told that the sausage attained a
length of 1,005 ells, 130 of which were
presented to their serenu highnesses at
the castle. All this happened at Ko
nigsberg. In 1013 Emperor Matthias
regaled the princess of the house
of Austria with a tournament, at which
the butchers of Vienna gave a repre
sentation of a peasant’s wedding, and
]«raded the streets with a sausage
measuring 999 ells.
DAHOMEAN AMAZONS.
Th. Severe Training of African Women'
Warriors.
The famous women warriors of Das
homey, who have fought so desperately
against the French troops, are trained
for service with a severity beside which
the discipline of our soldiers is luxuri
ous ease. They are recruited from girls
of thirteen or fourteen years, and also
from the ranks of criminals and evil
doers, for any crime Is pardoned to the
woman who enlists among the Ama
zons. They are compelled to sleep out
doors in all kinds of weather, to suffer
blows and kicks without complaint, and
are often kept starving for days. For
the purpose of acquiring proficiency in
scaling walls, the scantily clothed war
riors arc compelled to clamber to the
top of walls thickly covered with
thorny cacti, the ground beneath being
strewn with broken glass, llefore go
ing into battle liberal quantities of
rum are given to them to give them the
daring recklessness which marks their
attacks. They fire rapidly for a little
time, then charge upon the enemy with
their knives, and even when shut down
will fight to the last breath, stabbing
blindly at their assailants and biting
and tearing at their legs when they
can no longer stand.
TOO MANY FATHERS.
Difficultic* Which Confront the Kuivlau
hwaln.
A pretty story comes from Russia by
way of compensation for the many ugly
Stories starting there. During the last
Russian war with Turkey the soldiers
of a regiment rejoicing in the name of
the Kckhohnsky regiment found a
wfman lying dead with a living child
in her arms The child was adopted by
the regiment and educated at its ex
pense. At the close of her school life
she took up her abode with her col
lective fathers.
The other day a young Russian officer
demanded the hand of Marie Kekholms
kaya, of the regiment. A meeting was
called, the parents considered the mat
ter, and when young Lieut. Slemmer
gave proofs of his good character the
regimental consent to the marriage was
given. The lieutenant must be a brave
man to thus face a whole regiment of
fathers, when one father is usually con
sidered rather formidable when that
particular question is to be asked.
ICtiglUh aud American Pour.
One marked difference between the
very poor in the English cities and the
corresponding class in American towns
is that the latter buy their clothing of
tailors and manufacturers, and. there
fore, get it new. while the English poor,
and particularly the English women of
low (‘state, prefer the cast-off finery of
“the quality.” that is sold at the second
hand shops. The result is that the
American laborer and his wife make a
better appearance in their cheap, but
simple and suitable, garments than the
London navvy or hawker with a shiny,
ill-fitting broadcloth and his wife in a
garish hat with broken feathers, and
unfashionable, not to say bedraggled,
skirls.
