The Power of a Song.
[i was Sunday evening, and Brown's
•■aloou was closely filled with a noisy
throng of hoys and men. Suddenly
above ihe din, a sweet, childish voice
aros jin long, and tlir ugh the thiu
p.triilion came the words—
Tate the name of Jesus with yati.
Child of sorrow and of woe ;
If will joy and conduit give you—
Take it, then, where’er you go.
‘•That’s my little daughter, Bessie,
singing,” explained the proprietor. ‘‘l
d hi’t take stock in such songs, but she
has a praying mother.”
“Better hush her up. Brown ; she
will hurt your business,” whispered a
wily faced man.
There was a momentary hush, and
again the child’s voice took up the re
frain—
Take the name of Jesus with you,
As u shield from every snare ;
1. I. mptations round you gather,
Breathe that holy name in prayer.
A young man standing near the bar
resolutely set dowu his glass aud lelt
the room.
“\\ hat is the matter, Will ?” ques
tioned a companion, who followed him
out.
“Matter enough,” he bluntly an
swered. “I have a mother who has
been all her life praying for me, and I
had forgotten all her early instruction
till a moment ago, when that song re
called it all.”
“Yet there is hope still, if the song
be true. I had a praying mother my
self, and God knows I loved her,
though 1 never sought to follow her
example.”
The two young men paused just out
side the saloon door, aud gazed at each
other in blank despair.
“What is there in the name of Jesus
to save ?”
As if in auswer to the question, the
childish voice reached them again :
Oil ! the precious name of Jesus,
How it fills our soul With jov,
While His loving arms receive us,
And His songs our tongues employ.
The young men started silently down
the Hjuare together.
“There might be hope for me still if
I could only give up the drinking hab
it,” said Will, us he clutched his hands.
“Yet that song says “His name is a
shield front eveiy snare.” O, Will, if
that be really true, as I believe it is,
we need not despair. My mother used
to read about a dying thief who was
saved upon the cross, and we haven’t
got that low yet. Come to my room ;
there is a bible in ray trunk that moth
er gave me ; we will see for ourselves
what it has to say.”
“Whosoever will, let him come.”
“110, every ono that thirsteth, come.”
“I cmne not to call the righteous, hut
sinners to repentance.” The young
men coir, inued to read with hearts full
of hope aud courage. “Though your
sins be as scarlet.”
“That must mean me,” sobbed Will.
“But read on, Will. He says, ‘I
will male them white as snow. Oh! the
beauty of such religion, which lias the
power to blot out past iniquity, and
preservers from future evil.”
Little Bessie, tiie saloon keeper’s
daughter, never knew the influence
exerted by her song, but Will and his
young comrade, as they daily passed
by the attractive room where choice
liquors were displayed, uever did so
without thaukiug God that the propri
etor had a praying wife who had early
in life instructed her little daughter.
