A BALLADE OP THE OLD TROOPEP
The days of peace and days of pleading
Have been with me for many a year.
And further ever are receding
The daring days of blow and cheer.
Then bays and laurels alike were near.
The victor’s sword and the hasty spades,
When the sweetest music to the ear
Waa the clang and clatter and clash of blades.
Oh, the daze of dust and smoke, concealing
The old brigade as we used to ride.
With sabers sloping, yelling, reeling,
Our stirrups touching, side by side!
Now most who cheered and charged have
died.
The new day dawns: the old time fades;
No more shall crashing troops collide
"Niki clang and clatter and clash of blades.
When hands were clinched, and hearts were
burning.
And bugle notes were songs of praise;
The flag our trust, our souls outspurning
Thu baser thoughts of later days—
These days when men are in a maze
Of anxious schemes ami dubious trades;
My white beard wagged in other ways,
’Mid the clang and clatter and clash of blades.
1/ENVOI.
For naught to me is mart or city;
I dwell with ghosts of old brigades;
Would 1 had died with those you pity
’Mid the clang and clatter and clash of
blades!

Where Is Paris?
Most persons are under an impres
sion that they know where Pam is.
It is just as likely as not that they are
mistaken. Indeed, it is open to some
question whether anybody can say
exactly where it is.
It is very well known that when
the longitude of the French capita.]
was determined some years ago then 1
were discrepancies between the two
parties of observers engaged in the
business. The discrepancies were
never reconciled, and the difficulty
was got over by adopting the result
which seemed most likely to be cor
rect.
One thing, however, is pretty cer
tain, if we are to believe the state
ments of scientists, that in 3,000 years
or so the gay metropolis, or the test
part of it, will be covered by the sea.
For the mathematical observations
of the French engineers prove that
the south of France, especially in the
region of the Pyrenees, is gradually
rising, while the north of France is
undergoing a process of depression at
the rate of two-fifths of an inch per
annum.—Aunales Scientiflques.
A Touchy Race Horne.
Talking of Little Wenlock reminds
me of an amusing incident connected
with his shipment to Ireland. The
lad who looked after him at Hornsby’s
traveled with him to Liverpool. We
all know that Little Wenlock was
cursed with a very demon of a tem
per. Aware of this, the lad said to
tho man in charge on the quay:
“You had tetter let me lead him
down the gangway. He will go
quietly with me.”
But an officious helper at hand
said: “Do you think we don’t know
how to ship horses here? We’ll soon
take the nonsense out of him,” and
directing an assistant to lead the
horse he hit him a smashing thvfrack
over the quarters. Tho next minute
Little Weulock’s heels were out, and
the man who hit him was lying some
four yards off, with the knowledge
that there is that about a thorough
bred racer which had not previously
been dreamed of in his philosophy.-

A Stepmother.
“Mamma,” asked 4-year-old Bessie,
“What is a stepmother?”
Mamma was puzzled for a moment
how to answer her tiny questioner
on a matter so complicated. “Well,
dear, ” she replied, ‘ ‘if I should die and
your papa would marry again, that
lady would he your stepmother.”
Bessie was silent for a moment,
and as her next remark showed try
ing to understand what the word
step had to do with the matter. Then
with a wise nod of her little head she
said:
“Oh! I see. You would step out,
and she would step in.”—Exchange.
Why Johnny Ate Them.
Mrs. Billus (after the company had
gone)—Johnny, you shouldn’t have
eaten those preserved fruits. They
were not intended to be eaten. They
were put on the table to till up.
Johnny Billus—Well, that’s what 1
used ’em for, mamma—Chicago
Tribune.
The Congo is the most wonderful
waterway in the world. It is 25
miles across in parts, so that vessels
may pass each other and yet be out
of sight. It has twice the extent of
the navigable waters of the Missis
sippi and its tributaries and three
times its population.
Some tribes of North American In
dians punished matricides by hang
ing them by their hands to the limbs
of a tree, at a height just sufficient
to i>ermit the wolves to reach them
from from the ground. They were
left to be eaten alive.
Typhus Vaccination.
Professor Frankel of Berlin has
announced that he has discovered not
only the bacillus of typhus fever,
but also that, by using an attenuated
culture of it by vaccination, he has
been able to produce a rapid, benign
course of this dangerous and deadly
fever. Fast on the heels of this news
comes the report that Professor
Rumpf has cultivated an antifever
bacillus which will cure typhus in
eight days. The latter discovery is
an extraordinary one, not altogether
unlooked for. If the present bacillus
theory be true, for every disease
germ there exists a natural antidote
in the shape of another germ whose
function is to eat up the other or to
destroy its effect by rendering the
subject "immune.”
Heretofore M. Pasteur has been
the only successful discoverer along
this line, with the memorable excep
tion, of course, of Dr. Jenner. In
swine and splenic fevers and in
rabies, M. Pasteur Las found the ap
propriate antidote, but it would not
be strange if the material progress
of medical knowledge during the
next generation wefe directed to the
discovery of bacillus cures for all
the specific diseases known to man.—

Many lean Fast.
Chattanooga, Oct. 31.—The Trades
man, in its review of the industrial situ
ation in the south for the week ending
Oct. 30, reports that there is a decided ly
better feeling in industrial, financial and
mercantile circles, although it is not yet
time for tho results of the renewed con
fidence to be fully manifested. It is ad
mitted that the south is in better shape
than for many years to take advantage
of an increase in business. Less money
will be needed from outside sources to
move crops, and more money will be
brought m that will remain, for the
reason that the volume of indebtedness
is comparatively small.
The early estimates as to the amount
of cotton are being revised and increased
to meet the actual facts. It is beginning
to come in with a good deal of freedom.
In the iron industry and in mining af
fairs there is no change of any account,
and in new industries established there
is a slight falling off for the week.
Twenty-two new industries are report
ed as established or incorporated during
the week, together with five enlarge
ments of manufactories, and eight im
portant new buildings.
