Christmas Time.
Oh, joyful, magical, blessed Christ
mas tme ! May the echoes of that
heavenly song fall in the sweet melodies
of pardon and love, aud peace upon
every heart and every home into which
this message shall come ! May every
soul be touched and softened into the
tenderness and love and pity of Him
who came in the manger, who poured
out upon the world the bouudless
love of God, and who went up from us
uto the mansions which he is preparing
for us in our Father’s house by way of
the Cross aud Olivet ! \V r ho is to pass
from the home circle on earth to the
home above the coming year ? Shall
mother, father, husband, wife, broth.-r,
sister, friend he with us when Christ
mas comes again ? Oh, let this he
one of unalloyed love and joy. Let
those who have full hands open them
to the empty palms of those who are
poor and needy. Fill every home with
joyful surprises ,o the dear confiding
little ones, and every heart with lov
ing remembrances of Him whose
blessed birth the whole round world is
celebrating. Let estranged aud sepa
rated friends, and neighbors meet,
forgive and weave around each other's
hearts and homes again the strong
tender ties of love and friendship.
Those whom we ought, and whom we
intended seme time to forgive, will not
be here uext Christmas time, or we
ourselves will be beyond the reach of
the long-intended, but long delayed
forgiveuess and love of others when the
holy bells ring out another happy
Christmas morn. Oh, let Christmas
come in! Let peace and love and
joy fill earth and heaven ! —Selected.
Constitutional Am end input.
The Legislature passed at its recent
session a number of constitutional
amendments, which will have to be
submitted to the people for ratifies*' )U
at the next geueial election.
An amendment providing for the in
crease of the number of Supreme court
Judges to five.
This amendment was defeated once,
but the necessity for the increase has
become so appeareut that it is believed
the people will now ratify it.
An amendment which provides for
aged, infirm, poverty stricken or blind
confederate soldiers.
A hill was passed submitting another
amendment as to whether the Legis
lature shall meet in July instead ol
October.
Next year promises to be a lively
year in politics.
Over six hundred million dollars were
spent in the United States last year
for whisky.
It was rather a novel sight in Con
gress for Lon Livingston to be stand
ing up as the defeuder of Hoke Smith.
Politics make strange bed fellows.
It is said that nearly four million dol
lars worth of cotton was imported into
the United States last year—an in
crease of fully 50 per ceut. over the
importations of the year before.
A war among the preachers now
interests the public. Sam Jones is skin
uing llishop Hay-good in the public
priuts, aud I)r. Felton is denouncing
Dr. Hawthorne as a hypocrite aud dis
grace to the Christian miuistry. Let us
have peace.
Reports from every Georgia city aud
adjoiuing states show that the species
of influenza, now commouly called the
grip, is remarkably prevalent. The
physicians in Atlauta state that over
two thousand cases have been treated
in that city.
Florida . ranges are sold at a profit
in Europe. This establishes the fact
that they need no tariff duty, to enable
them to compete with foreign grown
oranges in the Uuited States. That is
too plain for argument. Oranges
ought to be put on the free list.
For more than forty years New Mex
ico has been knocking at the door of
Congress for admissiou in the union
and although her population was much
greater than other states that were ad
mitted, still the door was closed for the
simple reason that it was Democratic
It will be admitted at once. Arizona
and Utah will come in next.
The Poston Herald has this com
ment to make about the predilection of
Georgians for their govt ruors. It says:
“Tney seem to hive a ptrticuUr fond
ness for Methodist preachers for their
governors down in Georgia. Fix Gov
ernor Colquitt received his popularity
as an exborterfrom the pulpit, and now
General Evans, who was formerly a
Methodist parson down in Connecticut,
has the inside track for the next guber

HORRIBLE FATE.
A Negro Woman anti Two Children
Burned to a Crisp.
Ella Bledsoe is the name of a negro
woman who has beer, living on one of
the Sloan places, about a mile and a
half northeast of McDonough, for the
past five or six years.
Fllla had two children, one a hoy
twelve or thirteen years old, the other
a girl .«eral years younger These
thre i .cupied a double roomed, framed
house ail to themsdves, some distance
from any other people, though perhaps
two or three families lived in sight of
them.
Last Monday night Filla and her two
children met a most horrible fat"—an
awful reality which is only kuown to
occur, hut of which no definite account
can be given.
Some time during the night the
house was burned down, with not a
living soul, so far as known, left to
tell the tale. It was not discovered
until next morning—with only the re
mains of the three ocupants, charred to
a cinder, as silent witnesses to what
had befallen them.
The ruins were discovered by some
of the near neighbors soon after sun
rise. It was not then long before tin
news reached McDonough. A good
many people, black and white, visited
the scene as early ae possible, and
while there is no clue, the evidence is
strong that there was murder, with
incendiarism to conceal the crime.
The bones of FJIa were found with
the feet in the fire place, the otlieis
extending hack over the hearth and
the head lying on the ground.
Lying close beside each other,
though with heads in oposite directions,
were the remains of the two children,
in the position where the bed stood in
the other room.
In the fire place at Falla's feet an
axe was found, the strongest evidence
of foul play. Scarcely a trace of
flesh was left on the hones, which
were also burned to a crumble—conse
queutly, no marks of violence were
possibly disceruuble, should there have
beeu any.
After investigating as thoroughly as
possible, by summoningfour or five col
ored people as witnesses, the coroner's
iury returned the following vcdict :
“VVe, Ihe jury chosen and sworn to
inquire into the death of Bledsoe,
FM Bledsoe and Lil Bledsoe, find
that they were burned in the house of
Ella Bledsoe on the night of Dec. 18th,
1893 ; and from the surroundiug cir
cumstances, it is our opiniou that they
were murdered by an unknown party
or parties and the house fired to con
ceal the crime.”
The remains were so comph tdy
consumed that they had no resemblance
to human beings, even to the hones,
nearly all of which crumbled to pieces.
In short, it was a pitiful sight,
which one could but shudder to wit
ness.
Marshal Speer Shoots.
Marshal W. A. Speer, of Lovejoy,
and Mr. Hal Johnson, of the county,
engaged in a litile fracas at Lovejoy
to-day, which resulted in Mr. Johnson
being shot iu the arm with a forty four
calibre pistol.
It appears that the Marshal had been
instructed to arrest Mr. Johusou for
some offense and met with resistance.
Both parties are prominent and well
thought of in the county and the affair
is generally regretted.
Mr. Johnson is not seriously wound
ed aud will he alright in a short
time.—Jonesboio Enterprise, 15th.
