THE HENRY COUNTY WEEKLY
The Sew Colored Baptist Church of
Locust Grove.
Iu the beginning of ibis article, we
wish to sav to our friends ami man)
readers of Thp. Y\ kkkly that the long
looked tor and expected lime has about
rolled arduud for the erection of a new
cliuich edifice on the old church lot of
the Missionary Haptist church (Shoal
Creek) at Locust Grove, Ga. We had
almost come to the place to cry out as
oue of the prophets of old : "Ye see
the distress that we are iu, how Jeru
salem lietb waste, aud the gates
thereof are burned with fire ; come aud
let us build up the wall of Jerusalem,
that we be no longer a reproach.” Neb
2:17. So iu like manner we cry, “you
see the distress and needy condition
that we are iu, bow the wall of the old
structure plays, feels and rocks on its
pillows when heavy-burdened, almost
speakiug iu words of itself, 1 cannot
sutud the racket; how her doors have
fallen down on account of age, and her
windows that swing to aud fro have
[alien from their hinges, on account ol
use, and the wall that talks with the
March wind and notifies us at the vari
ous seasons of the year, telling us to
escape, for your time to worship here
is out, aud the shiugles which have
forsaken it aud joined the uortbern aud
eastern winds, causing the beating raius
to fall on us, its sills aud sleepers
which are worm eaten aud weather
beaten are crumbling to the ground.”
These are few of the things that tell
us we must build. So you see the dis
tress we are iu. We made our first
step to build about four years ago, dur
iug the life of our saiuted shepherd,
Rev. 11. Glass, who departed this life
about two years ago, and winged his
way to heaven through the pearly gate
iuto the everlasting city of God, there
to spend etei nity.
We succeeded in raising over oue
hundred dollars. For some known and
uuknowu hindering causes we failed to
do any more till the present fall, dur
ing which we have raised somewhere
near the same amount. We are in a
high spirit to build, aud we propose
to build oue that will be second to uoue
iu the community. Oue that will be a
credit to our little enterprising town, an
honor to God and man, an ornament to
the church seat, and a blessing to the
present and future church. Difiicul
ties have been many since we made
our first effort, and the clouds seem to
have been dark and gloomy, but now
they are th’ngs of the past, and the
darkness disappeared, and behold we
can cry in the language of Solomon,
"The path of the just is as the shining
light, that shineth mo e and more unto
the perfect day ”
The second Sunday, Dec. 9th, 1894,
is set apart fur general rally day for
the church. We want, at least by that
time not less than one hundred dollars
for this good cause. VVe will appreci
ate and thank you for any amount that
you give. We wish to have the co op
eration and sympathy of ail, both white
aud colored, saiut and sinner. Will
you help us ?
We have just filed an order for two
car loads of lumber. You may expect

Telfair Enterprise : The farmerg of
our section are thoroughly sick of cot
ton. We think there is no doubt but
that the cotton crop of 1895 will be 'he
lightest made for many years past. Ihe
crop should, be at least halved, if not
more. This is the only means by which
to secure better prices. Make half the
cotton usually made, and get as much
again for it is a great saving of cost of
production, housing, etc.

We Will Survive.
I'rue we have met the enemy and
we are "them,” but that is no reason
why we should bow down ourselves in
ahj-ct des lation and yield up the
ghost. The South at least is uot going
to do anything like that. She would
survive if the conditions were far worse
j than they are.
As we have said before our material
prosperity is not very greatly affected
by political measures uor do we sink or
swim upon the wave that floats either
of the p >1 ideal parties in or out of pow
er. Let these he as they may we are
far more dependent upon our individual
efforts; upon the mauuer in which we
use the natural resources a kind provi
dence places at our disposal.
With these resources the South in
general, Georgia in particular and this
section of the State more particularly
is blest. If we will take advantage of
them we will survive; will live and
move and have our being and build up
our financial conditions no matter what
party rules aud who governs only so
long as protection to our rights and
privileges were vouchsafed. This the
State government does aud it is iu
hands we can trust.
It is therefore useless and senseless
for us to look iuto a dark and dismal
future. There is none unless we close
our eyes and shut out the light that is
reflected from bright prospects which
will ever loom up before those who are
irttgal and energetic aud who appropri
ate aud properly use the natural advan
tages which nature places at their dis
posal.
Then hush croaking. Dispel that
look of gloom. There is no excuse for
them. 'Lite South and every citizoi
thereof is blessed, government or no
government. All we want in this life
cau he obtained aud there is no obsta
cle whatever placed iu our way to lay
up store for the life to come. We must
realize these facts and improve upon
them. If we do not woe unto our end,
but if we do great will be our triumph.
lint why all this wording. In shoit
it means we are not dependent upon
the government for a sustenance, but
upon our own efforts. Put forth those
efforts and fear uot.— Oglethorpe Echo.

The defeat of the Democratic party
in so many States, at the late election,
is another illustration “that a bouse di

The party was divided on the tariff and
financial questions, there was bittei
hostility in the party to the Adminis
tration, and each faction weakened the
party before the dissatisfied people who
had expected so much and received so
little from Congress. Political parties,
like individuals, must carry out t'-.eir
pledges and fulfill their obligations in
order to have the confidence aud res
pect of the people. However, it is use

Fish Catch Turtles.
"Turtle fishing is carried on to a con
siderable extent in the vicinity of the
Gulf of Mexico,” raid O. L. Davidson,
of Atlanta, at the Laclede last night,
according to the St. Louis Globe Deni
ocrat.
“ I'lte turtles that are most sought
for are the ordinary green turtle and
the hawk's bill turtle. In the neigh
bor hood of Cuba a most peculiar meth
od of securing the turtles is pursued.
They train, or a' least take advantage
of the instincts of a certain species of
fish. The fish is called by the Span
iards reve (meaning reversed), because
its back is usually takeu for its under
side. It has an oval plate attached to
its head, whose surface is traversed by
parallel ridges. By this plato it can
firmly atlhere to any solid body it may
choose. The boats which go in quest
of turtles each carry a tub containing
some of these reves. When the sleep
ing turtles are seen they are cautiously
approached, and as soon as they are
judged near enough, a reve is thrown
iuto the sea.
'•Upon perceiving the turtle, its in
stinct teaches it to swim right toward
it and fix itself firmly npon the crea
ture by its sacking disk. Sooner would
the reve sllow itself to he pulled to
pieces than give up its grip. A ring
which was attached to the tail of the
fi-di, in which a string was fastened, al
lows the fisherman to pull in his prize.
By a peculiar manipulation the reve is
pulled off, and returned to the tub, to
he ready for use again when the next
turtle is sighted.”

Youth
Is the period. It Is then that the
mind is freest from care, the Imagination
unhampered, the memory most retentive, the
eye brightest, and the nature most
susceptible. What a boy reads In this
period becomes so Indelibly Impressed upon
his nature that it becomes a part of his very
Character.
This is a time when a parent's responsibility
Is greatest. It Is not enough to tell the boy
what he ought to become. Most boys are
not overly susceptible to didactic
teaching. You can usually lead him a mile
easier than you can drive him a rod. See
that lie has the proper surroundings, and a
little encouragement, and It Is surprising how
readily he develops a taste for the best
In literature. I.et that taste be developed,
and there is little danger as to his future.

of a taste for reading, a sort of literary milk,
as it were, but unless the boy soon shows a
preference for the stronger meat of practical

The Hawkinsville Skinner tells this
story : “The other night it was our
privilege to face a Methodist.j preacher
in an eating match, half hour's test,
best two in three. We held our own
in the first and were making 2:40 timo
on the second round, when wo were
unexpectedly confronted by a yellow
legged rooster. The thought of our
opponent’s reputation for manipulating
things in this line completely paralyzed
us, and before we could get our ma
chine in working order again, the roos
ter had disappeared as though he had
taken wiugß and flown away. While
the preacher was declared the winner,
it was some consolation to us to know
that he was too full to crow over his
victory.”

each oue will think that the other fel
low won’t plant much, and that he had
better get the advantage by planting a
big crop.—Marietta Journal.
