McDonough, Ga., March 22,1895.
HKHRNIIGBA.
News still scarce. Perhaps it would
not bear washing and consequently all
faded out last week.
Very little done toward farming yet.
Some damage to public road bridges
by last week’s flood is reported.
Fruit trees still seem to be waiting
for winter to break.
The weekly settlement prayer meet
ing was held at the home of Mr. Wil
liam Hooten last Saturday evening.
Rev. Dick Manly says not a pound
of bought fertilizers will be used on his
farm this year.
Mr. Dory Welch of Sandy Ridge
spent Sunday afternoon in this comma
nity, and from his movements I suppose
that Mt. Bethel Sabbath School was
uot his chief attraction here, though be
attended the school.
Messrs. Dicken Edalgo and Tlieo
dore Phillips attended church at Fair
View Sunday, and reported a good
crowd in attendance.
I have not formed the acquaintance
of Mr. Bee Joiuer yet, but from the
turnout he drives and the object for
which he drives it I know he is a young
can of excellent taste.
I would be pleased to see the hap
penings in the vicinity of Locust Grove
reported to The Weekly by a good
correspondent.
Success to McDonough’s cotton mill
and to hundreds of other such enter
prises in all sections of the county.
During the past few weeks we have
had more than the usual amount of
snow aud rain, an eclipse of the moon,
aud the sun has refused to give forth
his accustomed light and warmth. 1
will not say that all this is nature
blushing and weeping over the specta
cle of the country being turned back
into the hands of its enemies as a re
sult of a little foolish division and dis
sensions among its professed friends,
thus throwing away in a few months
all the blessings of a victory which it
took thirty years of hard fighting to
gain.
This theory, however, would be as
reasonable as that Cleveland aud a
Democratic congress is responsible for
all the evils that have fallen on 'die
country for the last two years as some
charge.
Since we already have the llepubli
can party of gold monometalists, the
third party of silver monometalists, and
the Democratic party which is the only
true bimetalist party, 1 can see no use
for the fourth or socalled bimetalist
party, but “let her roll” as I have neith
er silver nor gold nor a mixture of the
two stuffs ueither party is likely to hurt
me much. Rural.
Peach trees are beginning to bios
soni, and certainly spring lias come.
Now, if it would only clear up so far
mers could begin their crops, we wou’d
soon have another lot of cotton.
Ho* happy we are at the coming of spring.
When there is music in every thing,
And the sweet flowers and plants begin to
grow.
There are happy times in Georgia, Sho !
Just picture the cattle in the green pasture
wide.
And the old mule we like to ride,
We’ll get the old demijohn and go to the
still,
What a jolly time I and Bill
Will have on a cool pleasant spring day,
Fishing for eel under the sweet bay,
And who will care how we raise sand,
Just so we are happy ou Georgia land?
Misses Aunie and Odie Wells and
Misses Miuuie aud Claudie Steele, four
of Spalding couuty's pretty young la
dies, were iu town last Tuesday shop
ping.
Quite a large crowd of young people
enjoyed an entertainment at the rest
deuce of Mr. J. M. Wells one night
last week. After all had enjoyed
themselves superlatively and were bid
ding each other good night, oue of the
young men went up to his girl to bid
her adieu, she picked up au old black
cat and spake iu a soft, sweet tone :
“If you love me, jou will kiss this cat.”
All laughed, the youug fellow blushed,
but the cat certainly was kissed.
Only a few m;re days aud the large
warehouse of S. R. Brown JE Sous will
be complete. I.uella now has a doct r,
and will soon have a barber shop, then
we want a black smith shop. We
think the latter would pay very well
here
The editor saw fit to omit a part of
our article last week, and under the
circumstances, we are very glad he did.
Judge 0. W. Dupree made a husiuess
trip down iu south Ileury last Monday
Let everybody around go to St. Paul
next Suuday to hear an interesting
sermon aud get their Suuday School
books. So they can learn the first les
sod of the coming quarter well.

Politics are numbered with the
things of the past, only every now and
then something is said concerning ,Jef
ferson iau democracy.
We are ail farmers dow n here, and
all agree that times are hard, speaking
about the financial condition of the
country, but nearly all have hog and
hominy plenty. The farmers as a geu
eral thing are in a better couditi n than
thev have been since the war, as far as
living is concerned.
We have splendid schools in our part
of the county. At Rock Spring, total
number of pupils G 7. Mt. Bethel num
bers nearly the same, under the super
vision of Prof. T. 11. Marstou. For
church convenience, no community can
surpass us, Methodist, church at Snap
ping Shoals, Mt. Bethel M. E church.
We have built a new A. R. l’r. sbj te
riau church iu less than a half mile
from our place. Jtisnew aud complete
throughout, and notwithstanding the
hard times and scarcity of money, it
has been built and is paid for, costing
near a thousand dollars, and is a credit
to any community The sound of the
hammer and saw is hushed, the stirring
and slapping of the paint aud brush is
laid away to be taken up no m re, for
it is finished both inside and out. Much
credit is due to Messrs. Pool and Bell
of Hampton for their push and energy
in giving it the finishing t< ueh ; and
will say in behalf of the ladies of out
e immunity to Mr. Pool, the contractor
for the painting, that they feel grateful
to him for the present he donated them
in placing that beautiful lettering in
rear of the pulpit, “ Trust Ye in the
Lord.” For him and his good lady
and children they wish a long, prosper
ous uti l happy life.
If any one wishes a good home,
pleasant community to live in, conven
ient to church and schools, we invite
such among us. We are also conven
ient to stores —J. S. Aikin & Co. and
W. B. Harvey at Snapping Shoals
about one and a half miles from us.
while Messrs. Dickerson dt Ilooten
have a flourishing business here at Fris
key.
The most enjoyable entertainment of
the season was given by the girls and
hoys of Rock Spring Academy on last
Friday night. Eight girls and nine
hoys participated in the recitations and
dialogues, which wete most admirably
rendered by all We can say truthful
ly it was equal to anything we have
ever heard, and
certainly speaks well for i
ty, and should be imitatW'Vj.y Goods 1
and the beauty about it it., .tie girls
and b >ys had an admission fee of only
10 ecu’s for grown folks, mid 5 cents
for chihlreu. They realized $7.10
with which they are going to buy a hi
bin for the A. R. Presbyterian church.
Those who took part in the entertain
ment were Messrs flius. Stroud, Jack
Stroud, Olin Adair, Sell Forbes,
Holmes Parks, Neal McDonald, Clias.
Fisher, Lum llqfitower and Rogus
llooton; Misses Daisy Dickerson,
Edna Dickerson, Mattie Huoten, Ma

Lois McDonald, Lora Stroud, and Del

and entertaining, and enjoyed by all.
