At an election last Friday Green
county went dry by 242 majority.
Floyd couuty has built over 70 miles
of macadamized roads with her con\ict
labor. The cost is about # 1,300 per

During the grand'army reunion at
Louisville last week, a caisou exploded
from the careless handling of the am
munition and five man were either killed
or horribly mangled.. One man was
blown over the top of a house.
Cotton picking has begun in earliest
and the crop is estimated to be a short
one in this section.
Visitors to this neighborhood during
the nine days series of meetings at Alt.
Bethel which closed Sunday night were
too numerons to mention. The meet
iugs were conducted till Thursday night
by Bev. J. T. Loyal, assisted by Rev.
Ed Cowan of South Georgia, after
which they were conducted by Bev.
C. C. Davis of Atlanta, Mr. Cowan
still assisting.
The meeting resulted in a revival of
the church, and several new accessions
to the membership.
The attendance during the days was
good considering the busy season, and
large at night. The best of order pre
vailed, and the display of chivalrous
youth and charming beauty could not
be excelled anywhere.
Miss Lcola Welch acted as organist,
in which art she succeeded admirably
well, for which she was liberally com
plimented. Mr. J. B. Merritt of Lo
cust Grove gave this station a call while
attending the meeting.
Au excussion of “straw riders” came
in nearly every night on the express
over the Snapping Sh • ale and Kriskey
line. I cauuot mention Straw, Shucks,
nor Sunday Rabbit hunting without
giviug names of authors.
Two gentlemeu came on a wagon 75
miles to this community last week and
returned the same day without Bpeud
iug a night with their relatives, who do
not know whether they got home sick
or got their feathers rumpled.

Flow Boy again, with the promise that
I will never blaspheme his great and
holy name again, unless I am forced
to do so in defense of myself or the
grand cause of religious and political
freedom, for my advocacy ol which he
seems (and almost admits himself) to
be so full of prejudice against mu that
he cannot see in anything 1 say, auy
motive but an evil one.
Having never been in politics, I have
never opposed him or any one else in
politics. Having cherished no other
than the kiudest of feelings toward him
personally I have never cast any
slurs at him, as he says he feels that 1
have. lam truly sorry that he feels
that way, hastily judges me and at last
hints at things that misrepresent me to
the public. To “consider the source”
of a thing emanating from a “dear
brother” and pass it “unnoticed” on
account of its source, all in the same
senteucc is at least a glaring incousis
tency. I would that Plow Boy, and
all the boys, would learn that with all
the other christiau graces, a man with
out charity becomes but a tinkling
cymbal and sounding brass, that
charity thiuketh no e\il. It purifies
the mind and teaches us that “all things
are pure to them that are pure,” that
“it is not that which goeth into the
mouth but that which cometh out of
the heart that defiletb a man.”
It even teaches us that whiskey is
not the only thing that will make a
man drunk when indulged in to “excess
wherein is sin,” nor drunkuess the only
vice that destroys uieu, for uo man was
ever more dangerously nor hopelessly
drunk than one who is drunk on preju
dice. lit ual.

If there is any one thing that Salem
settlement needs it is Mr. I). C. Collins
as road commissioner for a short while.
After the reception of six members
the Rev. J. J. Steversou filled his rug

followed by a strong and impiessive

Flow Boy wants to know who can
beat a inch ear of corn. If he will

There is a great diversity of opinion
as to whether Paradise and Heaven
be the same place or not. But Air.
11. S. Elliott has discovered a place
ttiat is possessed of a body, in whose
presence tho old seem to grow young
again, and when ha-king in the sun
shine of this charming planet one is
apt to become neglected in regard to
the future welfare of his sou', forget
ting that this canuot last always, and
as bis ingenuity is uuuble to devise a
suitable name by which he may desig
nate it, ho has been pleased to christen
it “Every Whore” so we do not won
der at his longing to stay there.
Repeated attornps have been made
to establish a debating society iu this
community, and so far they have prov
ed unsuccessful. Now this is very
discouraging to one who feels a deep
interest in tho welfare of the boys and
girls growing up in our midst. Parents
and young men, let tne entreat yon
to awake yourselves to a realization of
this all important duty that you owe to
yourselves aud to your posterity. If
you have au eye to the improvement of
your rniud and those of your children,
we do not how you can thus longer
neglect this matter, when more good
may be accomplished iu this way than
even in schools. To make a success of
any business one must keep together
all that ho makes or gains, and this is
doubly true with what we learn ; then
uotice how well discussions are calcula
ted to do this. As soon as we engage
iu it we begin to cast about and glean
up all we know, or have ever heard,
that we may be able to cope with our
adversaries. We ransack all the books
at our command for information; we
search our dictionaries for words hi
which to clothe our ideas; we train our
intellects and our tongues to act togeth
er; we learn to economize time; we
meditate and ruminate ; we cherish the
suggestions of our own miud ; we for
sake had babbits of sp.-eeb ; wo abandon
vice, because our minds are engaged iu
higher pursuits ; our imagination is
enlivened and bagins to soar iu the
realms of ethereal regions ; our souls
are exalted, our lives are euohted, he
cause of a consciousness of self work
aud we are prepared to follow higher
pursuits, better prepared to grapple
with and to overcome the obstacles met
with iu this life—in fact we are pre
pared for the pursuit of any avocatiou
or calling ; prepared to fill a higer aud
' nobler place in this world, aud better
prepared for the world to come. Then
by all means let us come together aud
orgauize a literary society, iu which
the boys and girls alike will be requir
to t:-ke a part. Do not longer indulge
iu the Delilah upon whose lap many
; a noble head lias been sborn of its
strength and mauhood forever. But
corue to Pleasant Grove Academy and
join with us next Saturday uight, the
21st, aud bring your childreu aud h%ve
your eyes opened to many more of the
benefits arising from debating societies.
