Judge W. T. Dickon spent Wednes
day with his sick mother at Locubt
Grove. Mrs. Dicken has been visiting
relatives in that vicinity for the past
week or two, some of whom we learn
have been quite sick with fever.
We have it from a reliable source
that cotton has been selling from an
eighth to a quarter of a cent higher in
this market than anvw'here aiouud us
this week. Watch McDonough again
this season and come to the best mar
ket.
The now firm of H. J. Copeland,
Sons & Co. make their formal an
nouncement in a large, attractive ad
vertisement this week. It speaks for
itself and needs no comment from us.
Read what they say and go to see
them.
Read handsome new advertisement
of the Fields & Ilenslee Co. in this is
sue. They are fully open for the fall
business, completely equipped in every
department, and are ready to meet all
comers. For full particulars read
what they say.
We neglected to state last week that
Dr. G. S. Tiguer and brother have
opened a nice dental office on White
hall street in Atlanta. This, however,
does not interfere with the doctor’s
regular time in McDonough, as he will
continue to be here the latter half of
each mouth.
Everything is higher now than it
was last fall except prices at the Back
et Store. They bought their goods
before the rise in prices and are still
selling on a parity with 5c cotton.
This firm is always the first to lower
prices and last to “put ’em up.’’ Look
out for their big “ad.”
Two gentlemen, one from Atlanta
and the other from Newton county,
have been in McDonough the past week
to use the madstone of Mr. Clements.
They were bitten by dogs supposed to
be mad, and the stone readily adhered
to both. They are progressing nicely
with their treatment, however.
The F’liut Biver Baptist Association
convenes iu McDonough to-morrow,
to remain in session three days. A
large, comfortable bußh arbor lias been
! erectad in the big spring grove, and
! our citizens are ready to receive their
I guests with open hearts aud homes,
trusting that the occasion may be one
of great good and all happiness. Again
we say, welcome !
More sickness is reported than for a
number of years in this’ section, of
i country. We learn that below Locust
j Grove the members of nearly every
family in the locality for some distance
around have been down at the same
time with typhoid fever. The onus
’ ually hot weather following the exces
1 eive summer rains perhaps accountg
j for so much sickness.

Mr. W. W. George lias taken his
son in-law, Mi. Bailor Smith, into
partnership with him, and hereafter
he business will he conducted under
the firm name of W. W. George & Co.
Mr. George is well known to every
body in this Section as one of the best
■if workmen, and it is useless to say
that under his management the new
lirm will prosper. See advertisement
and call on them when needing any
thing in their line.
Nice and Convenient.
Mr. Alec Lemon has recently fitted
the Brown House with the most perfect
private water system that could well be
arranged, including baths complete. A
largo resevoir has beeu placed iu the
stove room, and hot or cold water sup
plied'auywhere desired, the arrange
ments for use iu the cooking depart
ment being as complete as could well
be made.
Nice bath rooms have also beeu
added, one for tbe use of tbe hotel aud
the other private. The latter is a mod
el of elegauee, fitted with every conven
ience, and in fact • tho eutire system
could baldly be improved upon outside
of the large city water works.
In the front yard is a pretty fountain,
Idled with gold fish, forming an attrac
tive ornamnut.
Messrs Stewart and Turner have
also nicely supplied their premises,
though we have not inspected them,
and the efforts of these gentlemen to
supply themselves with good pure wa
tor have not only proved a complete
success, but a great luxury.
With tho Teachers.
The Teachers Instilute for Henry
county has been iu session this week,
and while the attendance is peihaps not
w r hat it might have been under favora
ble circumstances for ali, the town was
freely turned over to ihern.
In the absence of a regularly ap
pointed expert, Prof O. E. Ham of
McDonough was unanimously selected
by the teachers for this important posi
tion, which he fills with much credit to
himself aud satisfaction to all in atten
dance.
State School Commissioner Glenn
will be present today (Friday) and al
together the session will prove a very
interesting one. Indeed these assem
bliugs of the county’s educational custo
dians should always be among the most
important features of their work.
In this connection we take the liberty
of quoting a poet’s couplet, which some
one has commended to all teachers :
“A little learning is a dangerous thing—
Drink deep, or touch not the I’ferian
spring.’’

“Wash Guthrie” alias “Wash the
Eater” alias “Speckled Wash,”is in
trouble again. This time it happened
iu Mr. Fouche’s town, McDonough.
It seems that “Wash” was out wad
iug around in the dark, and as this is
the first large city he has struck since
leaving Jackson, he slipped his bear
ings and got lost. Here’s how it bap
pened.) “if it was not for letting
Bro. McDonald of the Jackson Argus
get hold of it, we would tell how
Guthrie got lost in McDonough one
night last week with his youog lady
(also a stranger) friend, and had to
offer a reward for a passiug pedestrian
to tell him where he was, after wan
dering aeound some time on the wrong
street. Lookout, “Guih” or we are
afraid “Me” will be ‘on to you.’*”—
