originated by us, All successful spcdulators operate on a regular sv-ttom.
It is a well-known fact that there are thousands of men in all nails of the United
States who, by systematic trading through Chicago I rollers, make largo aim.tints every
year, ranging from a few thousand dollars for the nun who invest * i hundred or two
hundred dollars up to $511,00(1 to SIOO,OOO or more by Hu-, . who invest a 1. w thousand.
It is also a tact that those who make the largest pi,.BN fio’n eompnrativelv small in

<>ur plan does not risk the whole am,mut invested on any trade, but c ivers both

Di.PARTM .NT or AOMOULTL'EH,
Atlanta, Ga., Sopt. 8, 1805.
The farmer’s fall campaign opens
with the month of .September. After
tho comparative leisure of August, he
s.loulu start in with renewed energy
ami with brain and muscles nervod for
the task ho settles down to the steady
work of gathering in tiie crops, aud
getting the fall grains aud grasses prop
erly seeded.
GRAINS AND GRASSES
The late August raius have greatly
interfered with the work of preparation,
which is unfortunate, as this work has
more influence on the yield of these
crops than, perhaps, all other condi
tions eom pined, fertilization not ex
cepted; for, without thorough and deop
preparation no fertilizer can perform
its full mission, aud muoh valuable and
costly plant food is thus wasted.
Last month we dwelt somewhat at
length ou the preparation, fertilization
and sowing of these crops, aud wo will
only reiterate here that, on the earli-
U'-ss and thoroughness with which
those details are attended to, depends
success or failure. It is not yet too
late to push this work of preparation,
aud tho recent rains have loft the land
in fine condition to do the work very
effectively. This is the best month for
getting in the winter oats. Grass and
clover alsp should bo sown Whout
can wait a little later. Iu tho cate of
tiie grasses aud olover, tho majority of
southern farmers have little expe
rience; but it has been proven that
where judgment is exorcised in the so
lection of situation and soil, aud oaro
fui methods of preparation and fertili
zation obtain, most gratifying results
have followed. These crops may be
sown with the small grains, but fann
ers who hove tried both plans, strongly
refiommoud that they bo sown alono.
Often not a sufficient, quantity of seed
is used. In view of tho foot thpt many
of tho seed do not germinate, evon In
tho best samples; it is important to al
low an ample margin in estimating the
amount o; seed for oaoh acre.
German or crimson olover for wiutor
grazjng and for feeding in tho early
Spring is attracting widespread atten
tion. In Georgia it has scarcely yet at
tained popularity, but in some otlior
southern stuDos it is oousidored as head-
KA4 t-iv; list of all crops intended for
tfcftfo utHcposes. it gives good returns
worn uud on which the ootnmon red
clover would not succeed, and is of
equal value for improving tho laud and
for load. It can bo seeded from the
middle of August to the first of Octo
ber from 13 to 15 pounds to tho aero,
lightly brushed or harrowed in, and
after winter grazing and outting, if tho
stock are taken off in March, sufficient
seed will mature to fully l-o seod the
laud, which can then bo prepared for
late corn. When the corn Is gnthored
tho olovor comos ou again. Thus two
crops can be obtained aud the land, in
stead of being exhausted, is gradually
being built up.
COTTON.
As the cotton opens the pickers
should keep up with It Early picked
and clean cot.’ou oommands a better
price than whore the sample is in
jured by beating rains, or stained
from the weafhor. Attention h:d
already been repeatedly called to the
condition in whioh our Ainorloan
cotton readies European porta. The
eastern cotton growers set us an ox
ample in this rospeot whioh, if we
would imitate, would moan thousands
of dollars to U 3. The Indian and Egyp
tian grower sends his oottou to market
in neat, compact bales, well covered;
ours is ragged and unsightly, and ofton
enough of the contents of each bale is
wasted in trunsit to pay for any addi
tional care and expense which might b*
necessary to put it up in better market
able shape.
The actual pur cent dednoted, beoause
of our oaroless methods, whoa the price
of our staple is fixed in Liverpool, would
be an astonishing revelation to the ma
jority of farmers.
