The United States Tobacco Journal
states that the falling off in the de

to 700,000,000 cigars, and this loss is
very generally credited to cycling.
The legislature is passing upon the
bills that come before it with commend
able promptitude and it now looks as
if all important business would be fin

Governor Atkinson is still silent as

about Mr. Atkiusou than be is about
himself, says an exchange.

The Sparta Ishmaelite is exactly
right in saying that there never was a
worse or more ridiculous bill intro
duced iu the Georgia legislature than
that of Senator Mercer, designed to

Mrs. Louisa l'orter Gilmer, widow
of ibe lato Gen. J. T. Gilmer, chief of

A Texas paper says that iu one of
the earliest trials before a colored jury
in Texas the 12 gentlemen were told
by the judge to “retire aud Hud the
verdict.” They went into the jury
room, whence the opening and shutting
of doors and other sounds of unusual
commotion were presently heard. At
last the jury came back into court,
when the foremau announced : “We

doahs, but it ain't nowbar in dat bless

We bad always been undecided on
the subject of womau’s rights until we

Great Corn Shipment.
There is reason to believe that the
efforts which have been made for sev
eral years past to popularize American
corn in Eurojie have had decided effect,
say those iu a position t-> know.
The foreign enngumption of our corn is
increasing at a rapid rate An unrea
soning and therefore a very strong
prejudice against this wholesome food
exists among the masse* iu the crowded
countries of Europe, but they are be
ginning to learn its merits.
Last Saturday the largest shipment
of corn ever made from New Orleans
went out of tbit port in a British
steamer bound for Copenhagen. The
cargo consisted of 175,000 bushels, car
ried mainly in bulk.
We have produced an immense su -
plus of corn this year and in some parts
of the west it is being sold so low that
the practice of using it for fuel which
was once common in that region bas
been revived. The foreign demands
is stiil so light, compared to this im
mense crop, that the pric i of corn is as
yet little affected by it. But it may
be that our exports of corn will soon
increase to a point which will make
our production of that staple far great
er aud decidedly more profitable.
A Wonderful Man.
A man named Schlatter suddenly
made his appearance in Denver, Col.,
a short time since- lie claims to have
come from the mountains, and aunouuc
ed that he was a minister with super
natural powers—that he could heal
the sick and do other mirae'es.
At fust, bis claims were laughed at
as the ranting of a crank, but he aston
ished the natives by healing chronic
cases tlist bad defied the skill of the
doctors. Mis fame went abroad and
crowds flocked to see and hear him.
His dress was very plain, and be re
fused all compensations Money was
offered and it was refused. When it
was seut by letter be returned iu.

Tlie Christmas Number of Frank
Leslie’s l’opular Monthly.
The Christmas number of Frank
Leslie’s Popular Monthly is already
out, and will hardly be surpassed in
richness aud beauty of pictorial illua
tratiou, or iu seasonable variety of lit
erary contents, by anything that may
lollow during the holiday teuton
Tbe opening article, upon “Heroines
and ileroiue Worship,” affords a vehi
cle for nearly a score of exquisite re
productions from tbe old and modern
master painters. A similar opportuui
ty is found iu the inteusely poetic
story, by A. Cressy Morrisou, of “The
Man wiio Uesembled Christ,” which in
addition is illustrated with some origi
nal drawings of rare delicacy. In
“The City ot Dordrecht,” George C.
Unite fairly revels iu the picturesque
giving us eight of his loveliest aquar
ellcs. The greut literary feature of
the number is Tolstoi's latest story,
“Master uud Mail,” specially translat
ed from the Russian for Frank Leslie’s
Popular Monthly, aud illustrated by
Fogarty. A charming novelty is “A
Daughter of the Samurai,” by Teiicbi
Yaumgata, being an up to-date Japan
ese love story written in English by
a Japanese author. Amongst oiber
contributions deserving special meutiou
are “Heroines of Chivalry,” by Mrs.
Frank Leslie ; “Literary Roster,” by
Liliau Whiting; “The St. Nicholas
Society,” by Will P. Pond ; “How tbe
Wixes Joiued the Four Hundred,” by
A. Oakey Hall; aud “A Legend of
Jeauue d’Arc,” —the latter being a
poem by Francois Coppee.
