Death of Mrs. Martha Phillips.
After long aud painful suffering,
this good old mother passed over tli
river of death to enter upon the vine
clad banks of the river of life. In
writing this brief tribute to her mem
ory we will let it suffice to sav, she
was a devoted and earnest member of
the Primitive Baptist eburch for more
than three score years. Mother Phil
lips devoted loved her Lord aud Sa
vior. Whatever her imperfections
may have been, she never neglected
the assembling of tho saints, and her
faithful attendance at the house of God
testified to her devotion lo the cause of
her Master. Her hopes of a better
inheritance than she ha<l in this world
was all resting upou the promise of her
Savior. She claimed no works o f
righteousness to eutitle her to the sav
ing mercies of our God, but her faith
laid hold upou the alter that was con
secrated with richer blood than was
ever offered on Jewish alters. We
are fully warranted in saying her name
will be found written in the Lambs
Book of Life. What need v e anything
higher and better than that? The
newly male grave in which she is
peacefully resting to night may be
seen just out in the tear of the old
consecrated church at Lebtuon. At
the hour appointed the slow tolling
bell proclaimed the coming of the
heirso, and the burial obsequies were
near at hand A man of God had
been called to render the funeral ser

waiting for its coffin, and after a last
farewell gaze “on the face of the dead”
slowly was the corpse bourne to its
resting place. Sleep on now mother.
