Create Prosperity.
The Baltimore Manufacturers’ Re
cord gives our people the following
advice:
“All through the South there are
towDS having excellent natural advan-
tages —towns in which money is lying
practically idle, bringing little or no
good to the community. If every such
town in the South could be iuspired
with some of the hustling qualities
which have made Atlanta and which
are todav bringing to the front Rome,
Georgia, now one of the most couspic
uous places iu the South, because of
its success in capturing great cotton
mills, hundreds of the towns through
out the South would quickly spring
into life and activity. The South has
the ability and the money to build up
its own industrial interests. It ought
to be more independent, more self
reliant, aud its people ought te unite
and through active co operation gather
into manufacturing enterprises its now
unutilized capital, and thus cease to
depend upon outside men aud outside
money. There is scarcely a town of
1,000 people in the South which could
not raise .f 2d,000 or $.'0,000 or if 100,
000 of local money for the purpose of
starting industrial euteprises; but there
is too much lack of public spirit and
broad minded energy iu many of these
towns.”
Strike In Columbus.
It is unusual to see a great strike in
tho South, but there is one on in the
Eagle & Phoenix mills in that city
now.
A few days since the directors of
the company which employs a large
force of hands, and which haß beeu one
of the most successful cotton mills in
the South, determined to reduce the
wages of the operatives, and especially
of the weavers. As soon as notice of
this reduction was made an indiguatiou
meeting was held and a committee ap
pointed to confer with the officers.
Nothing could be doue, as the man
agement said it was impossible to con
V.iitue the wages at the present price of
goods in the market.
Last Saturday 300 weavers walked
out and refused to work longer at the
reduced prices. They tried to get all
the hands to quit, hut failed.
The situation is a very serious one
to the strikers, as nearly all of them
are dependent ou their daily labor for
a means of support.
Always Somebody to Kick.
A brother editor thus bemoans some
of the vissitudes of h's calling :
“ There are always those who will kick.
For instance, if you publish jokes with
whiskers on them, some will say that
you should be in a lunatic joint; if you
don’t print something to smile at, they
say you are a pessimistic fossil. If
you spread yourself and write a good
original article, they will say it is sto
len: if you reprint an article, they say
you cant write. If you say a deserviug
word for a man, you ore partail; if you
compliment the ladies, the men are
jealous; and if you don’t, the verdict of
the ladies is to the effect that your
paper is not fit to use in the construc
tion of a bustle. If you stay in your
office, you are afraid to remain on the
streets; if you do not you are lazy.
If you look seedy, you are squandering
your money; if you wear good clothes,
you are a dude and don’t pay for them.
So mauy campaigns all on hand at
once is liable to get a voters head iu
such a twirl that he nor nobody else
can tell “where be is at” when he comes
to cast his ballot.—Oglethorpe Echo.
Three of the men who wrecked the
Southern train below Macon a mouth
or two ago are in jail in Macon. They
are named Shaw and the evidence is
pretty conclusive against them.
A sensation was created in Washing
ton last week on the receipt of a dis
patch that England was ready to ac
knowledge the independence of Cuba

Mr. Editor: —Iu a recent issue of
your [taper was a very interesting in
terview with Mr. Thos. 1). Stewart on
the financial aud coinage questions. 1
don't think I ever saw a better expo
sition of the Chicago Democratic plat
form as to these matters. Fur the
benefit of the public aud as a matter of
real interest we would be glad to have
you leproduco it. It is simple and
eaeily understood. It is not hedged
about with financial abstrusities, but is
plaiu, comprehensible and coraprehen
sive. Our free silver frit nils could
hardly desire any more iu the iuteiest
of progressive Democracy and national
prosperity. Wo do wise our populist
anil silver friends of the uni mi e l
persuasion would leave the dancing
phantoms of impossible finance and
come back to tho old trodden paths.
I here is no safety el sew 1 -t re
Ry the way, it is understood that
Mr. Siewart is an aspirant to the sen
atorship of this district. It is an hon
orable ambition, and we trust he will
have no opp -sition. lie is worthy and
well qualified, aud would make an ex
ceptional senator, one of whom not
only the district, but the state, would
be proud.
This may sound like bold language
to he spoken, or written about any
body. but our candid opinion is that he
only needs to be tried to show the true
stamina of character that make up the
strength of the man that he is Agaiu,
Mr. Stewart can be trusted; and in
these days of political upheaval, when
all sorts of chaiacters are thrown to
the surface, he would become a good
exemplar of true Democracy aid hon
est devotion to honest government.
The country has a kind of propri
etary interest in the taleuts and ener
gies of her people, and the right, of
course, to select her servants from
among them, but only the ablest aud
safest should always be chosen to man-
age and to run the machinery of gov
ernment. The government of this
great country becomes more and more
ponderous as tho years roll on, and
unless its best and truest men are put
into office and kept it will but
repeat histoiv, aud fall at last under
its own vernality aud corruption. The
muse of history pauses here to chant
the dirge of many a great aud gallant
nation of the past. Wo can, if we will,
avoid the rocks ou which they split,
Let us put into offi -e, and koe p in
office, the very best men we have.
