Victims of Politics.
Don’t go into politics for fuu. It
may be fun at the start, but it is cruci
liction at the last. The paths of poli
tics iu all lauds are lined ou both sides
with the bleached skeletons of might \
men. “Hand us auoiber,” says pub
lic life, as it pitches one man aside and
clutches for some promising man in law
or merchandise or social position.
Politics must he reformed, and if you
have the martyr spirit go into them ;
but if you undertake that style of life
for regalement and profit, you make »
mistake that cannot be corrected. A
United States senator writes this advice
to a boy. “If I were to express any
regrets or designate any great error ot
my life, it would be that I had ever
connected myself with party politics,
or accepted a policical oflice. If you
would be happy or useful, or selfres
pecting, I would advise you to let party
politics and political positions severely
aloue. The only safe spirit in wlrch
to enter politics is the martyr spirit,
and then if you are sacrificed, you will
not be surprised. The fact that you
have great brains affords no safety
That is the very reason why you will
b- put down or viciously handled

Bribery at elections should be attend

done something to check it, but this
source of corruption shouhl be cut out

The Free Coinage of 1 i on
Having been deeply impressed bW
the arguments of Judge Cwsp, Bryan,
Livingston and especially ibi; Atlanta
Constitution on the financiil issue iiojm
before the people, and blpg deepl|>
grieved, shocked aud horrjflat by the
stupendous loss entailed onlthe pedplk
of the South by the “awttl crime of
'73,"amounting to no less tflan $3,0*00,
000,000 according to ray Iriynd, Mr
Jerry Goldsmith, iu his a blit paper in
last Sunday’s Constitution,, 1
changed my views on the s6ney queh
tion, aud am ready to maintain tfie
propositions following, eitifjjr ih .jhitj;
debate or in newspaper
with all comers—l acceptjtheff.argu
ment, aud agree with thatf proposed”
remedy, as far as it goet, only 1 don't
think it goes far enough. Let us have
plenty of remedy, in fact.enough-so
make debt and poverty tli£|s of the
past, relics of the dark agefcp' ’lpw*-g
I am iu favor of the freeman# tin lim
ited coinage of pig iion a£ #ij&een to 1
one, and can produce untfqfftHed auY
thoiity for the proposition pat such u
course will “raise prices,’’Put plenty
of “money in circulation!’ and bung
about general prosperity. SjE*,, ,
Now in the first ft’may'be
urged by some who do not understand
the subject of standards off value that
such an act of congress woujd not raise
the price of pig iron to thisj Iflvel. To
them I reply, “The stampjoCTliek,gov
ern meat’’ and its “legal tepdijr quali
ties’’ would instantly make tse bullion
value of pig iron the same Ua'Mbe miul
value. “For who would part'with an
ounce of this metal for au|gliiiig less
than the mint value?” (UrMin, Jones
and Stewart).
Again, it may be urgetj that our
mints would he overcrowded'Y'With pig
iron. I reply, “That the m e of pig
iron having been raised firatn $1 25
per ton to a ratio of 10 to,] (pith gold
ihe world over, no one wouloLcare es
pecially to carry it to the mill since all
of his pig iron would bring
in the open market anywtPwflN"f#f e *
lanta Constitution).
Next, it may be urged/t|SgSfci and
silver would go out of tylWfation.Tr
reply, “First;* this is a mefe assumption
of the tools of the money power, which
they cannot verify.” (Atlanta Cousti
tution); second, “Suppose they did,
isn’t there enough pig iron to take
their place aud give the pedlple plenty
of money?” (Bryan); and. third, that
“such an assumption mixes up circu
lating medium and standard of value
that gold aud silver wonld 5 still be po
tential money motals, even if not in
circulation, and would help to raise
prices aud aid in the general prosper -
ity.” (Crisp.)
Then again, it may be urged against
the pig iron basis that wages would not
rise in proportion to prices. The re
ply is “wages would be compelled to
rise, since no man would he fool enough
to work for a dollar a day, who c >ul<l
make SI,OOO picking up old nails and
horse shoes and carrying them to the
mint for coinage.” (Hull.)
Iu addition, it may be urged by the
money power that we could not alone
go on a pig iron basis without an inter
national agreement. “To such das
tards as dare to lay a limit to the pow
ers of the American people to do wbat
they please, independently of all na
tions, I hurl their cowardice and lack
of patriotism back in their faces.”
(Bryan.)
The “crime of demonetizing iron”
took place about 2,000 years ago in
Greece, when certain goldolators and
silverites, in order to increase the pur
chasing power of their ill gotten
wealth, secretly got the demonetization
act passed in Sparta, and prices have
been going down ever since. Today
China is the only country on earth
honest enough to still coin iron, and
there the happy laborer can carry home
the wages of his honest toil in a wheel
barrow. (Atlanta Constitution )
I have calculated the losses entailed
upon the honest people of this world on
account of the demonetization of pig
iron, and the ruinous fall in prices
consequent thereon, but I fear to give
the figures, lest a revolution follow.
However, I’ll give them and the people
can act accordingly. The loss is ex
ac 11 y $13,000,000,000,000,000,000,.
000,000,000,000,000 (J. W. Gold
smith.)
In conclusion I insist that the free
coinage of pig iron will do everything
that is claimed for silver and infinitely
more. The people will be rich and
| prosperous. The once poor man can
1 pay all his debts with his old stoye.
The railroads can declare dividends on
old rails, the small boy can pick up old
! nails and horse shoes to support his
; family. In fine, poverty and debt can
no longer exist! Ai.f.x P. II LLi.
