An Interesting Debate.
Every Saturday evening at Prof.
Garrison's school house at Cross
Koads'in the Sixth district of tlenry
county, the entire neighborhood as
sembles to discuss some subject, usually
in regular debate; each side of the
question having its champions, who
present to the judges their views on
the subject under debate, and the
judges decide which side is the most
ably presented and award the prizes to
the successful contestants.
Last Saturday night, May 2d, the
subject discussed was, "Which is the
best for the people of the United
Stateß to have, a single or a double
standard of money.' 1 ” Messrs. Asbury
Mays, Ed Audrews and Jordan Hood
spoke for the single standard and
Messrs. Dude Fields, Robert Hill and
Prof. Garrison f«»r the double standard
'1 he single standard men made strong
speeches in favor of a sound and stable
currency based on a single standard,
and the double standard men urged the
free coinage of silver at 10 to 1 ill an
able manner. Roth sides were well
represented, each speaker doing his
best, and the subject being one that is
very much discussed at present both
sides were able to bring out much in
formation and present their views in
an impressive mauuer.
The judges were .Messrs. I. B.
Pritchard, Parks Wise aud Phillip
Mays. They listened carefully to both
sides of the question and weighed
everything carefully, and decided to
award the prizes to the advocates ol
the single standard, as the speakers on
that side called for a sound currency
based on the intrinsic value of the
metal represented, aud not on an arbi
trary ratio which might be constantly
chauging.
There was a large crowd of ladies
and gentlemen present and the debate
was much enjoyed by all who beard it.
