In the future no railroad train can
carry freight cars in Georgia on Sun
day. The Federal Supreme court has
so decided in a test case.
liditor Gus Morrow Las withdrawu
from the senatorial race in Clayton
county, leaving the democratic nomi
nation open to Mr. Alf Blalock.
Courthouse bonds wore defeated in
Butts county Saturday by a vote of
382 to 108. The election being on the
eve of the primary election no
interest was taken; consequently a very
small vote was polled.
It is gratifying to Judge Boynton’s
numerous Henry county Friends to
know that he will have no opposition
for the nomination for represenative
from Spalding. Col. Mills announced
his withdrawal last Saturday.
State School Commissioner Glenn
makes the stratling statement that
Geogia has spent more money for jails
in the past ten years than she has spent
foi schools in lifty years. This state
ment certainly does not show a favor
able comparison between the progress
of education aud crime in the State.
Two negroes were lynched in broad
open day time in Columbus last Mon
day, on the most prominent business
street of the city. Both were charged
with rape, aud one was taken from the
court house, where he was on trial,
having committed the crime only a few
days before. The other had been in
jail two years. It created the biggest
sensation of the kind ever known in
Georgia, aud the Governor has offered
a reward of $5,000 for the leaders.
Six hundred armed men are said to
have been in the mob.
For Democrats Only.
The primary to be held to morrow is
democratic, aud dcmecrats alone are
entitled to vote. Whoever is unwill
ing to abide the result of the uomina
tion should be kept out; he’s not a
democrat and has no right to vote in
the primary. No loyal populist, or
other partyite, would attempt to vote
in an outside primary. We do not be
lieve the report that they would do so
true to any extent, and therefore pass
it with only a word of advice. This
is a democratic primary—let uo man
vote who is not a democrat.
The Delks.
Tbe trial of the Delks at Zebulou
last week of course attracted a great
deal of attention, and while the ver
dict met with general approval, there
is some adverse criticism upon the seem
ing hasty action of the court.
In behalf of Judge Beck, we deem
it but just to say, he is firm in main
taining that the prisoners were accord
ed every protection of the law, and he
only asks a fair investigation of the
trial for an open expression. The re
port that arms were carried into the
court house duriug the trial was re
pudiated as utterly untrue by the an
tborities.
The following report is taken from
the Pike County Journal, the home
paper published at the scene of the
tria':
The trial of Sheriff Gwyu’s murder
ers passed off quietly here this week.
They had five lawyers aud their case
was conducted ably.
Where witnesses could not be secur
ed for the defendant Judge Beck re
quired the state to admit that the wit
ness would swear to the facts mention
ed. Not only this, he required the
state to admit such evidence as the
truth of the case.
Every effort was made to have an
absolute fair and impartial trial. Ot
course the assassins were auxious to
have their cases put off, but there were
no legal or moral reasons for it The
trial of both Taylor and Tom I)elk
was had in fairness aud quiet aud the
only verdict which the jurv could have
rendered without perjury to themsel-
ves aud an insult to the law was render
ed.
We are aware that in some quarters,
where the details of the trials are not
known, our county authorities have
been greatly misrepresented and slan
dered.
In almost any section where a crime
similar to the one for which the Delks
were tried, had been committed, the
murderers would have been lynched,
Here, however, they were given a trial
according to law aud the maudlin sen
timeutality in some’of the Atlanta pa
pers which seek to reflect on the court
is the result of iguorance. If such sen
timents should become rooted into the
public mind the safe guards around
human life would be torn down and
mob law would supplant the court of
justice.
The Journal congratulates the court
and its officers on the prompt and
Jaitbful discharge of their duty; we
congratulate the pe !a that they res
trained their ja»V rf aroused passions
and permitted 'he courts to try these
cases ou their merits from sworn evi
dence.
Both cases have been carried to tbe
(supreme Court, aud the hanging will
pot occur ou tbe }9ib, m first set.

—To tlm Managers of the Demo
cratic Primary for Henry County,
to be held June 6, 1 HUG :
Kumors having reached us that the
populists, or at least some of them,
intend to vote in tho coming demo
cratic paimary, we take this method of
giving our understanding of the mean
ing of the order passed by the Execu
tive Committee calling the primary, in
asmuch as there will be no meeting of
said committee before the nomination.
It was uever intended that populists
should vote, except those who have
decided to abandon their party and
hare come back to the democratic par
ty, and will abide all its nominations
aud will support all its nominees. All
others should not vote, and if they un
dertake to do so the managers should
refuse to receive th'eir votes.
