A Petrifying Water.
A mile and a half from Frank, I. T.,
a very large spring of clear, sparkling
water bubbles up through the gravel
at the foot of Boggie Mountain, tum
bles swiftly down the hills over numer

at Franks for the Hon. B. F. Byrd.
In the water is substance that attaches
itself to the buckets of the wheel, form
ing a hard, smooth stone about them
that has to be broken off every six
weeks with a hammer. Wood or bones
thrown into the water are petrified in a
very short time, and rare aud curious
formations are to be seen in and about
the stream. Near the mill the roots of
a large fallen tree, over but uot iu the
creek, are all turned into stone.

A WONDERFUL DREAM.
INTERWOVEN WITH THE STORY
OF A VEST.
Vexatious Experience of a Populist.
CHAPTER VI.
“Life on the ocean wave.
Home on Ihe rolling deep.”
During our voyage over the Gulf of
Mexico the finest of weather prevailed
and the roaring old Gulf was unusual
ly placid, and “The Populist” sped
over the waves like a thing of life, aud
it was unanimously agreed to by our
entire party that such life on the ocean
wave as we were enjoying was well
worth the living.
Most of our party were only on a
pleasure bent, but my mind was engag
ed with the busiuess I had iu hand, to
obtain some honest money that would
be acceptable to the proprietor of the
Omaha store iu Populistown; but 1 was
looking forward witli great anticipa
tious of being regaled on our return
voyage with many interesting incidents
and curio’s of the land of the Aztecs
gathered by those of our party who
were not engaged with business of more
importance. »
Just after noon on the third day, by
the aid of a small telescope we Bigbted
the port of Vera Cruz, and lying im
mediately in frout of the harbor we
could discern a small fleet of vessels,
as if they were on the lookout for
something. This we did uot under
stand; for we did not then know, as we
afterward learned, that our departure
from New Orleaus for Vera Cruz had
been heraled before us, by cablegram as
a matter of news, and forwarded to the
city of Mexico by telegraph, aud that
Presulent Diaz had called a meetiug of
his cabinet aud telegraphed back to
the authorities at Vera Cruz concern
ing us; but all this was true.
As we approached nearer the harbor
we noticed that these vessels, ail of
which bore the uational flag of Mexico,
started to meet us.
They were war ships; but showed no
signs of hostility to us. They came up
in a breast iu fiout of, saluted and
halted us.
Some of the officers then came on
board “The Populist,” and I asked
them what all this meant. One of the
men, the spokesman of the crowd ans
wered that be regretted very much to
have to inform that it meant that we
could not land on Mexican soil, nor
none of our party go ashore. He then
handed me the order concerning us as
telegraphed by the president from the
Capitol. It was as follows:
“Treat‘The Populist’ civilly, al'ow
her passengers to transact friendly
business only by proxy, through trust
worthy men But subject her to the
strictest quarrantiue and by no meaus
allow her to land, nor any of her paa-
senders to come ashore ”
I demanded a reason for such a
course of action as this and he gave me
a copy of a daily paper containing a
full detailed account of the cabinet
meeting, its deliberations, the con
clusions reached and the reasons there
for. They had reviewed the history of
populism iu the United States, and
traced its course form repuhlicau bead
quarters in Washington to the west in
18S7, from the west to the south iu
1888, from there to Ocala iu 1890, to
St. Louis in 1891, to Omaha in 1892,
to Washington under the leadership of
Coxey, Kelly and Co , in the spring of
1894 and to Chicago under Debs, Alt
geld and Co., iu the summer of the
same year. They noticed that under
' all its various names and iu all its
phases its nature had been the same,
ito oppose all existing conditions with
out offering any practicable remedy for
them, and to oppose all progress that
they might have the lack of progress to
point to as a reproach to existing con
ditions. The Mexican authorities rea
soned that if populism conld for the
space of eight years shake the fouuda
tions of the government of a great na
tiou like the United States, with a
sound currency system, a world wide
credit, boundless resources and a pop
ulation of 70,000,090 it would be un
safe to let it gain a foot hold in a little
republic with only 12,000,000 popula
tion, a weak credit, a debased and con
traded currency like Mexico.

An Awful Warning.
Last Saturday a week ago near
Meadows, Appling county, Ga., a queer
coincidence occured, which should not
be lightly pitched into the rubbish pile
of Fate’s decrees, says the Douglass
Breeze.
At or near Meadows there lives a
family of Turners, consisting of three
sisters and a little girl, the daughter of
oue of the three. On the day above
mentioned oue of them was iu the field
lookiug over the farm of which tbev
ate owners. For lack of rain the crops
were suffering greatly, ami the pros
pects were gloomy. This fact seemed
to fret the youug woman, aud site
sought to allay her displeasure by de
nouncitig God iu most, 'blasphemous
terms for his seeming dLfavor. She
returned to the house late In afternoon,
and about dusk a cloud a*we and there
came up a thunder. Tht} three sisters
and the girl had assembled on the pi
azza of the home quifßy watchjng
what they thought would’le to them a
gracious rain, when all atleiice a hril
liant clash aud a heavy clap of thunder
broke the silence, only to Cause a deep
pall to settle over the household. The
cursing sister lay on the floor a corpse,
the other two sisters wcreAhocked into
insensib'lity, and the little girl was
critically injured.
When the two sisters were sufficient
ly recovered they summoned Dr. J. S.
Dedge to the little girl, her recov
ery is very doubtful. DrJiPeJge says
the woman killed had hone iu
her body crushed and her *shoes were
torn into shreds.

Bane of the Credit system.
The credit system has been the bane
of the South, says the Rome Tribune
and it is the cause of more than half
the trouble and distress in the world
today. Men worry their lives out try
ing to meet financial engagements that
they might have avoided and been
much happier and much more success
ful.
If consumers would live within their
incomes and pay spot cash for their
purchases merchants would be enabled
to dispense with much of the addition
al trouble, expense and loss attached
to the credit system. The farmers are
profiting by this and already tho signs
of improvement are apparent in a mar
ked degree.
Had the Southern farmers not been
backed up by a country of inexhausti
ble resouices, they would have been
irretrievably ruined by the credit sys
tem that prevailed for so mauv years.
As it is they are coming out of the
wilderness and if they persist iu their
present practices of industry and econ

They have stopped the pernicious cred
it system and are now on the high road
to a grander prosperity than lias ever

Moral Cowardice.
The most pitiful paradox in nature
is physiciul bravery allied with moral
cowardice. A man may be as brave as
a lion when it comes to a personal en
counter, where mere brute force is all
that is required, but if he has not tho
moral courage to do right for tho sake
of right, he is a detestable travesty ou
manhood. No man ueed he afraid to
do right, lie muy avoid the conse
quences of a (istcutf and still be braver
than Caesar.
It takes a lino sense yf courage aud
a pure heart to he able to ackuowledge
an error aud endeavor to repair a
wroug aitd the man who cau do it dej
serves all praise from his fellowmen
and God will not withhold from him
his ju«t reward. If we were true to
our nobler aud better instincts tempta
tions would not liu<l us so vulnerable
to every assault, but too lifter we are
led astray by our selfish motives.
The thing to cultivate is not so much
au irou muscle, but a heart of steel, ex
pansive to every noble impulse, yet
sufficient to resist every temptation.
The least siu possible is the hope of
mankind. Absence of siu is a dream
of angels. Let us all therefore, re
solve over aud above all, to try to he
true to our own better iustiucts and to
deal justly with our fellowmeu and to
reverence and serve God as becomes us
Mis creatures.
