The Slate Democratic Convention
meets next Thursday, the 23th.
The Spauish government is making
ready to send 30,000 more men to
Cuba and several warships.
Sheriff Barnes, of Atlanta, does not
believe that Meyers has ever left At
lanta. As he was defeated in the re
cent primary, it is understood that he
will withdraw his offer of SI,OOO re
ward for tly capture of the murderer
of Crowley.
This is the democratic party’s ceu
tennial year. It began its great career
in 179 C, and has been doing business
at the old stand uninterruptedly.
Prior to 1860 the democratic party had
elected twelve and the Federal and
Whig parties four Presidents. In the
sixty four years of its ante-bellum life
the democracy had controlled the coun
try forty eight and its opponents six
teen years. In seven out of the nine
presidential elections since 1890 the
Republicans have carried the country.
The democrats have elected fourteeu
Presidents and all the opposition par
ties but eleven.

All the Atlanta Journal says about
our nominees Stewart and Turner is
very nice, good and deserving; but
what do you reckon the Journal thinks
of a large majority of their constitu
ents. Let us hope will
be as true to democracy as Stewart aud
Turner.
We have had our primary, with a
large vote. Two thousand democratic
votes makes Heury a democratic coun
ty; and we have a good ticket, and
would have had, no matter which of
our aspirants had been chosen. It is
remarkable what harmony we have
had, considering the issue existing, but
now as the issue is removed and we are
all one, lei us have perfect harmony in
Henry county; and we will be glad if
our friends outside the party can see
their way clear to join in with us and
let us have a solid county again Let
all be as-conservative and generous as
they can, so as not to sacrifice princi
ple. We are just as strong an advo
cate for restoring silver to its former
place as money as it is possible to be,
and believe it to be the mission of the
democratic party more than any other
to restoie it; and if she does happy anti
prosperous generations will rise up to
call her blessed! See how spontane
ously they voted it. 1 believe they
voted silver into nearly all of aur gold
' democrats, and the work has just begun.
With a good, plain, honest democratic
platform, and some good candidates
who will act in harmony with their par
tv, wc will have a chauce of electing
another president, and if we shou’d 1
do not believe that within the next
fifty years we will have one who will
iguore his party and her demands. If
we can get a good, souud, strong lead
ing democrat like Stevenson, Boise or
Crisp, et, al.. with a good second, they
will develop all our strength, with
large gains, and if elected will give us
such a good administration; and how
n cely and well Would they fill the ex
ecutive and preside over the Senate.
John M. Thurman.
