Arkansas democrats want bland for
president.
Hon. Hoke Smith i 9 to address Tam
many on the occasion of its Fourth of
July celebration.
‘‘The most careful coward I ever
knew," is the way a western delegate
speaks of McKinley.
Mr. W. C. Wallace, a Taylor eounty
l’opulist, announces in the Roberta
Enterprise that he is a candidate for
the United States Senate.
GrilGu’s two cotton milts shut down
last week because the proprietors say
the market is oveistocked, and that
cloth can be brought cheaper than they
can n.ake it
Washington county Republicans will
have two candidates in the lield for the
legislature. This was determined upon
in a mass meeting at Saudersville Sat
urday.
It is said that ( oriijressroan Black
contemplates retiring at the close of
his present term, and the name of Ex-
Senator Patrick Walsh is being spoken
of as his successor.
It is said that the actual appropria
tions made by the congress just ad
journed exclusive of the future liabilities
incurred under the contract system,
amount to 8515,759,820.
The commencement editiou of the
barnesville Gazette last week was the
largest paper we ever saw from a
weekly office. Jt contained 32 pages,
and was a high credit to the progres
sive town in which it is published.
Lucie Sid Lewis, the wildest free
silver in Georgia, has come to the con
elusion that it would be a good idea to
trade to the republicans all the demo
cratic goldbugs of the north and east in
exchange for all the free coinage repub
licans m the south and west. And he
further predicts “That is just about,
what will be done.”
Two citizens of Fitzgerald
ried to Macon the other and trim
before United States Commissioner
Erwin ou the. charge of retailing with
out license They were dismissed, how
ever, as it was developed at the hear
ing that they had made application for a
license, and pending the receipt of the
license had commenced selling.
“The newspaper man," says a Mis
souri editor, "errs in permitting his
friends to get too close to him.” A
number of years ago a great newspaper
man said, "the friends of a newspaper
are either the people who want you to
print something which ought to be left
out or 'eave out something which ought
to be printed.
Hon. Henry G. Turner, of the 11th
district, declined the nomination fur
congress Thursday because he could
not defend a national democratic plat
form pledged to the free ami unlimited
16 to 1 silver coinage. He will vote
with the party, but prefers to retire
from congress rather than to oppose
th« policy of a majority of bis party
associates.
All the ciude notions about tuonet
will be dissipated when it is understooi
that its value is not real, but a distribu
tor of wealth. It is not the yard stick
but the cloth it measures, that possess
es the value. It is not the metal o
which the pound weight consists, bu
the tiour which it weighs, that is tin
vital question to be considered. It n
not the material of which money ii
created which is of the Hist importance
but will it command its face value it
any kiud of property desired.—Ex.
The republican platform declares fot
the gold standard, denounces demo
cratic rule, wants immigration restrict
ed to those who can read and write
desires liberal pensions and the build
ing of the Nicaraugan canal, favors the
Monroe doctrine, dodges the Cuban
question, and promises reciprocity to
all. Governor McKiuley of Ohio wa>
nominated for president on first ballot,
while Garrett A. Hobart of New Jer
sey received the nomination for vice
president. \Yi f h a straight free silver
plank, as now seems certain by the
Chicago convention, the prediction is
now’ freely made that the democrats
will win a sweeeping victorv iu th u

think some good man with tbe capital

Measles have about disappeared in

by the measles settling ou him. lie is
