How the Vote Will C'ount.
There are people that do not under
stand thes>stem under which our pres
Menu are elected. There are very iu
ulligcnt seen who think it will be of
advantage to Llrvan in Georgia, for in
stance. that he will head both Demo
cratic and Populist eh ctortal tickets,
and that his elective vote here will be
tile sum of the votes cast ior those two
tickets. This would be true if the peo
p!e voted directly for President and
Vice- President, but they do not vote
:or them at all. Their names at the
head ot the ticket are simply distiu
guishiug marks. I hat is all.
The vote is cast tot the electors; and
where the electors on the two tickets
are different, the tickets are as much in
opposition to each other as they would
be if one were for the Democratic nom
inees and the other for the Republican.
I bis would be true were Bryan and
Sewall or Bryan and Watson to bead
both the electoral tickets.
It results from this that, although
Bryau’B name may appear at the head
ot both the Democratic aud the Popu
lists electoral tickets, he is actually
running against himself.
People speak loosely of voting for
Bryan and Sewall or for Bryan and
Watson when, iu reality, they do not,
vote for them at all. Their names torn
trorn the top of their respective el. ctoral
tickets would not invalidate the tickets
a particle. The names of the electors
would be left, and it is the vote for
.hem that couiits.
It ought to be plain, from this, that
a thousand votes cast for the Demo
cratic electors aud a thousand cast for
the Populist ekctois so far trom count
iug as two thousand votes for Bryan
and a thousand, each, for Sewall and
Waisou, would simply neutralize each
<.ther, and leave the candidates in the
same position, relatively to each other,
as if uot a vote had been cast. Only
one set of electors should be chosen.
Then, not a vote would be lost, hut
,every oue would count for Bryan.—

Graves On a Green lltll Side.
It is said the dead are soon forgotten
when laid away to rest in their graves.
Much depends oil who are the dead,
whether they are -o soon forgotten.
There are three little graves, all placed
side by side, the infants of a loving
mother, w hose memory of her dear lit
tle babies has never beau forgetful. It
is but seldom that 1 ever think of these
liule graves, but the deep shadows
that all over the bowed heart of that
young mother, continue to linger along
her pathway. One of these bright
sparkling babies, her first boru, had
just attained to that period of his sweet
childhood that always brings sunshiue
and happiness to the loving mother’s
heart, when the sombre winged angel
was commissioned to pass through that
happy home and lay his icy touch upon
that mother's idol, O how bitter the
cup pressen to her lips to drink.
Time passed on, and to her were
given two others at a siugle birth.
The clods that had hung so heavily
begau to receed, and let in returning
sunshine, but alas, for earthly hopes,
one of these two must be takeu, but
the other left. Again must she drink
of this bitter fountain. She looks out,
and yonder comes auother little casket
to claim for its inmate another one of
her j :wels. ’The time had now come
to take her parting farewell gaze on
this one too; she sees it carried out to
meet the fast coming train, to bo car
ri, dup to the old home giave yard
amidst the “Graves cn the greeD hill
side.”
Into the hands ot others, this grief
smitteu mother commits this one, to
be bourn away to its long, quiet home.
Viewed from a poor frail human stand
point, surely this will suffice. How
can anything more be required? Could
a loving Father make such’ a demand?
Just oue month intervenes, and the
last one was taken, bide by side all
three of them are sweetly resting in
their peaceful grave.
It will suffice simply to state, that
these were infant children of Mr. R. L.
and Mrs. Mary B. Marshall of Hous
ton county, and grand children of Mr.
J. C. Griffin, formerly of Henry county.
Oue after oue, loved ones of the family
are gathering home. Let their resting
place be kept fresh iu our memory by
the fragrance of the flowers we plant
to bloom over their graves. Wait,
mother, till the coming of the harvest
and your little babies will meet you at
the pearly gate. Wait the trumpet
blast, and you all will heat “Home.”

A festive Ilibernain, taking his way
beneath the light of the setting sun,
decided to facilitate his progress by
taking a path through a meadow, which
decreased the distance of the road by
! half a mile.
About the center of the field he re
[numbered that a particularly savage
hull was “grassed” there; but to turn
hack was impossible, as the uncertain
light rendered the whereabouts of the
animal a mystery.
“lie jabots!” exclaimed Pat, after
scratching his head a moment, “one
of them poet fellows had said that mus
ic can blarney the savage beast. Here
goes for ould (Breland,” and he struck
up, with more zeal than melody, “Erin
Go Bragh.”
In a moment a hoarse bellow an
nounced that the bull was listening.
t hey both reached the stile togeth
er, and there was a toss up as to who
should be ovei first, in which Pat was
aided by the hull.
When he recovered, and lay watch
ing the hull endeavoring to climb the
fence, he muttered:
“By gum, either that poet feller's a
liar or I sung the wrong tune.”— New
