The otlicial count gives Gov. Atkin
son’s majority something over 35,000.
and la’ance of the State ticket about
50,000.
Since his nomination Mr. Bryan has
delivered 208 speeches, spoken in 22
states and 172 cities and traveled
8,030 indts.
The Democrats and Populists in
Arka -.is have agreed on a fusion elec
toral ticket and there will be no con
t st in i hat state.
A nuiutier of Manufacturing Com
panies in the West have posted notices
that if Bryan is elected they will in
crease the wages of their employees
ten per cent.
Fr ui a number of candidates who
are pressing their claims on the public
for judge of the Supreme court it
doesn’t seem that they are afraid of
the small salary.
Hon. Steve Clay has beeu very highly
congratulated upon his magnificent
management of the democratic cam
paign, aud the sweeping victory is am
pie evidence that be deserves it all.
Tom Watson is still confined at his
horn iu Thompson with sore throat.
It is said the campaign has been too
great a strain upon him, aud that he
will piobably be unable to take any
further part in it.
The women are arming themselves
in Cuba aud fighting Spaniards. A
mount'd baud headed by Sen
orita Perez dashed into a town garison
ed by 200 Spaniards t and killed Bt|8 t|
three of the ( shot. Hed
band is swon\ a Spaniard.
In speaking of the November con
test Congressman Livingston says that
Bryan’s election is as certain as auy
election is before the votes are count
ed. Mr. Bryan is making votes every
day. lie has the republicans frighten
en. They will soon he on the run.
They have been over confident and I
regret that they have awakened to a
realization of their danger. Bryan is
stampeding the people of the middle
states and victory will be ours on Nov.
3rd.
The Next Legislature.
The Democrats will have control of
the next Legislature by au overwhelm
iug majority.
The Senate stands Democrats 39
Populists, 4, Republicans, 1.
In the House, out of a hundred and
seventy five members, 14C are demo
crats, -3 populists, 2 republicans and
2 Independents.
Neill’s Kstlmate.
The estimate of the present cottou
crop which Mr. Neill publishes in
Liverpool Monday is considerably lar
jer than was expected. He places the
crop ai between 8,900,000 and 9,100,-
000 bales and believes that it will
reach the latter figures if frost comes
late—in the cottou states.
Mr Neill has won much reputation
as au expert cotton statistician. Some
«f his estimates have been remarkably
accura'e, but it is the opinion of lead
ing cotton men in New York and New
Orleaus that he is now much further
from the facts than usual. The best
opinion in this country is that the crop
will not exceed 8,000,000 bales. That
Mr. Neill’s figures are not generally
accepted is evident from the fact that
after his bearish figures were published
cotton not only stood firm but advanc
ed considerably during the day. The
pros pect of a price which will give a
good profit on the crop is excellent —

ASSAULTED HV A NEGRO!
Koul Crime Near Luella Stirs the En
tire Community.
News reached McDonough ytster
day morning that about 4 o'clock the
evening before, as Miss Blanche Gray
was returning home from Luella, when
about two miles below there, was as
saulted by a negro mail named Henry
Milner.
At this writing it is impossible to
get a full aud defiuite report of the
heinous crime, but it is stated that the
victim was clutched by her throat, car
ried into the woods near the road aud
choked iuto insensibility, when the
brute accomplished his foul crime aud
left h< r.
As soou as Miss Gray regaim-d cou-
I sciousness she went to the residence of
| l)r. Wells ciose by and gave the alarm
The community was aroused in a flash
and a large posse of men started in pur
suit of Milner as quick as they could
be gotten together.
He was chased iu various directions
until 10 o'clock, when he was cap
tured in the house of a negro only a
few miles from the scene of the crime,
taken before Miss Gray and identified.
One report says the posse at once
started to Gridin with their prisoneti
and when Wolf creek swamp was
reached he got away. Another is that
he was in Griffiu yesterday moruing
badly wounded, in the hands of a mob
aud being carried out west of Griffin.
It is impossible for us to state deli
nitely at this writing what his fate has
been, but it is useless to say the courts
will not be the scene of a trial if he is
i caught.

Cut to the Neck.
A sensational difficulty occured on
the streets of McDonough last Sat
urday afternoon between Marshall
Willis Gondwin and Mr. J. W. John
son (or “Rig J.” as he is familiarly
known) iu which Mr. Johnson was
pretty badly cut in the neck bv young
Willis Good win.
Hot words passed between the two
parties named and they clinched, when
Willis Jr., seeing his father down and
Mr. Johnson on him, ran up and cut
Johnson just over the jugular vein, on
the neck. The combatants were thru
sepera’ed. and Mr. Johnson after a
short while went to Dr. McDouald's
drug store and had his wound sewed
up.
The affair caused considerable ex
citement for the time, aud is much re
gretted.

He received one of the handsomest
Democratic majorities ever given in
the district. Henry county rolled 'up
a majority of 393, DeKalb 388, Gwiu
nett 393; total, 1,174. Mr. Stewart is
one of Henry’s most prominent citi

Now let the old wounds heal.
If the weather continues favorable,
all crops will be housed by the last of
this month.
It’s too bad. I have been silently
waiting for the last month, aud uot a
single wedding has occnred in the
neighborhood for me to tell ah ut.
Miss Ozella Wynp has returned
home from a visit of several weeks to
relatives in Atlanta
But few changes of residence are an
nounced for next year among the peo
pie of this neighborhood
For some reason Rev. I’. R. K»n
dull did not show up as usual at Mt.
Bethel church last Saturday, and a
prayer meeting only was held bv the
church. In the evening the Fpworth
League met and elected new officers as
follows: President, Frank Strong;
first, second and third vice presidents,
George Spinks, Mrs. Alalia I.ancester
and Miss Josie Willingham; Secretary,
Slugleton Hunt, aud' reelected Miss
Texie Austin us trersurer,
Mr. K. L. McMullen of Atlanta
made a short business trip to this sec
tion last week.
Mr. Gunter of White H. use has
beeu chosen by the and ,pat
robs of Mt. Bethel Acadamy to teach
their school bext year. Mr. Gunter

Senatnr T. 1). Stewart proved a
record breaker on the Senatorial race
track, and the people of three counties
have shown their appreciation of his
sterling worth.and their confidence in
his ability in the counsels of the stale.
The result of last weeks elections
show that the people of Henry county
aud of Georgia are uot yet ready to flee
to Populism us a remedy for their ills.
The result : s perfectly satisfactory
to all Democrats, while many of the
the Populists accept it phillosophically
knowing that aside from party pride
and the satisfaction of gaining a viciory
there could he uothiug gained by ex
changing the State and county officers
elected by the democrats for any men
that any party could put forth in the
State or couuty.
Cousin Steve Clay, in his remarks
on the result offers some whohsome
food for thought for Georgia Populists,
and I bilieve that if their fiery Oracle,
Torn Watson, would only talk to them
iu the same concilliatory straiu that
Mr Clay does they would gladly heed
bis advice and two years hence would
find u* practically a reunited people.
