Better than either is a healthy

man is 0. K. His blood is kept

PHE HENRY COUNTY WEEKLY
j How President and Vice President
Are Cbosen.
The people do not vote for the pres
idem or vice president. They vote for
electors and the electors vote for pres
•dent and vice president. The various
political parties place presidential elec
tors in nomination with the understand
iug that they are to vote for certain
persons for president aud vice president
The electors may vote for whomsoever
they please. The law does not com
pell them to vote for their party norni
nee. But no elector has ever failed to
carry out the wishes of the party that
uominated him. Etch state has two
electors at large and one for each con
gressional district. The voters iu all
pai ts of the state vote for
a'l the electors, those
in other districts and the two at large,
as well as for the one in the district in
which the voter resides. Michigan
elected for a while by districts, but,
we believe, has adopted the usual
method. The electors receiviug a plu
rality of votes are elected. It is not
necessary to elect that the candidate
for electors shall have more than than
half of the votes cast; those receiving
the highest number of.votes are elected
In Missouri, for instance, the highest
seventeen will be elected.
The electors must then meet in their
respective states on the first Wednes
day iu December next after the elec
tion aud vote for president aud vice
president. A certificate as to the re
sult is sent to the president of the sen
ate at Washington.
Ou the second Wednesday in Feb
ruary the president of the Senate aud
house opens the certificates and the
votes are counted. If any person has
received more than half of the votes of
the electors for president, he is elected
to that office, otherwise the election of
president is thrown into the House.
When the House votes it votes by
States, each casting but one vote, aud
a majority of states is necessary to a
choice. The house must choose from
the highest three in the electorial col
lege. The house cannot take up a
new man, but must make its selections
from those already voted for in the

Informing the OIU Gentleman.
She had excepted him and he was
very happy, until she broke iu on his
bliss by suggesting that the little for
mality of seeiug papa had better be
gone through without delay. Jt would
be all right, of course. No pareutal
objection would be made, but he must
be asked for his consent, just as though
he really had some say about the mat
ter.
The young man demurred. He shrank
from telling Mr. Densmore that he
loved Ida and Ida loved him, and that
Ida’s papa’s consent to, their engage
ment was all that was necessary to
make them happy. He kid he would
see Mr. Densmore latei? He said he
would call him up by telephone next
day. There wag many, reasons why
Mr. Densmore ought najto be botherel
that night. Perhaps he was smoking
in his den. Perhaps he had gone to
bed. Perhaps he was ijpt at home. *
Ida wold listen to noqe of these ex-
cuses. Papa was in the house, and he
had not gone to bed, aad ho was not so
absorbed that he could not be seen, aud
he must be asked that vjry night. If
Mr. Sanderson would not ask him, Miss
Densmore herself the sub
ject, and Mr. Sanderson let her have
her own way.
The two went to Mr. Densmore’s den
and knocked at tbe door.
“Come in,” said a voice on the other
side.
Miss Densmore opened the door with
one hand, and led Mr. Sanderson with
the other.
Papa Densmore looked surprised, and
raised his eyebrows interrogatively, and
his daughter said:
“Papa.”
“Well, daughter.”
“Charley aud I are a notification
committee, papa.” ?
“What sort of a notification commit
tee?”
“We have come to notify you that
you have been nominated to the proud
position of father- in-'awfThere! That’s
all. You needn’t make a speech in re
ply. Sit down, papa, and go on with
your reading and smoking.”
The girl then closed papa’s door and
the notification committee roturned to
the parlor. {’

It Will lie a Happy Memory.
After the excitement of the electiou
is over one of the (nippiest memories
of the campaign will be the womanly
devotion of Mrs. Bryan. During the
long and fatigtrng tour of her husband
she has been his coustaut companion,
sharing equally with him the aunoy
ance of the busting*, and acting as ud
viser aud supporter in times of mental
deprestiou.
Whether or not Mr. Bryan is elected
the public will know that his wife is
worthy the title of the first lady of the
laud, and should the misfortune of
politics doom him to defeat, she will
have won her way into the hearts of
those who admire such wifely affection.
Af.er all, there is more comfort,
more genuine happiness to be derived
from a home where connubial relations
are congenial than cau bo found iu all
the houors a public can bestow. There
is none of the fasoination of high social
standing iu humble life, or the glamour
of satisfaction to be realized from the
sycophancy of fawning followers; but
who wants them when the contentment
of a modest little home is so much more
gratifying.
From a philosophic standpoint tho
the defeat of Mr. Bryan will be bis
greatest blessing, next to the ODe he
enjoys iu being possessed of so loving
a helpmate. He can then retire to the
sereuity of domestic bliss, a desirable
condition that his electiou would prohi
bit.—Washington Times.

The Voting Machine.
Several years ago a voting machine
was invented aud industrious efforts
were made with some success to secure
its adopt'on for local and general elec
tions.
Recently a Massachusetts inau has
iu vented an ether voting machine which
he claims is superior to anything else
of the kind yet produced, lie has
induced the authorities of the city of
Worchester to accept his machine for
use iu the presidential election. If
they prove satisfactory there they will
probably be adopted in other localities
What is known as tbe Meyers voting
machine has been used frequently in
town elections iu New York. The
voter at precincts where these ma
chines are used touches u button which
has on it the name of the candidate
he wishes to vote for and his vote is
recorded on a register inside the voting
booth. One button will register a vote
for an entire ticket. The machine is
absolutely accurate and reduces the
chances of fraud considerably.
The day may not bo far distant when
we will all be voting by machinery.—
