The Charge.
Following is Judge Beck’s vigorous
charge to the Spalding Grand Jury,
relative to the lynching in Gnffin last
week :
“Within about two years three ne
groes have been lynched in this county
—a county that could justly boast of
its population along all the avenues of
civilization. In neither case has the
crime for which these negroes were
lynched been committed in this couuty.
Two had come from Heury and the
third from Meriwether.
"Your attention is now called to the
fact that to avenge crimes committed in
other counties a mob was collected on
the streets of this town and on the
roads of this county, and have cruelly,
deliberately, defiantly committed will
ful and outrageous muider. There
can be no question as to the nature of
the offense committed by yesterday’s
mob—it was awful, uuholy, uncalled
for muider.
“Your foreman tells me that you can
finish your work* today, but I say that
you must stay here until you go to the
bottom of this business. Stay until the
end of the week if necessary; stay next
week if you can’t finish during this,
and I will adjourn court in another
county so as to hold this court m ses
sion.
“See to it that some man is punished
for this shameful deed. See that
Spalding county is not made the damp
ing grouod for the criminals that other
counties want lynched. See that other
counties no longer look upon this as
the. shamble to which they lead brutes
for the butcher.
“And I charge you now to lay aside
all other work, stop all other business
and ferret out the murderers. ludict
every man who took part, directly or
indirectly, in the work of the mob.
Swear in twenty bailiffs if you need
them; send out hundreds of subpoenas.
If found necessary, close every store,
every bank and office, and bring their
inmates before you to testify against
the lynchers. The mob walked these
streets aud were seen; bring here the
men who saw them aud let them give
the names.
“Send to Pike and Meriwether
counties and bring witnesses. If auv
man on the grand jury can’t enter
heartily into this work, let him retire
from the jury and let his name come
out of the grand jury box.”
The Fighting Gordons.
Gen. John B. Gordon, one of the
most distinguished of the surviving
Confederate Veterans, visited the camp
of the Third Georgia Volunteers, im
muues, at Savannah, Ga., and with
Col. Ray of that regiment inspected
the command.
Every adult male member of Gen.
Gordon’s family is in the army, two
sons and one grandson. One sen is a
major in the Third Regiment, aud the
other is an officer in a Georgia regi
ment stationed at Tampa, while his
grandson is in the ranks at Chica
mauga.
Gen. Gordon is of the opinion that
j from this time on it will be both nec
essary and advisable for the United
States to keep what to us will be con
sidered a iarge standing army, lie
expects this to be recruited from the
volanteers.
“Once a man gets a taste of army
life,” said General Gordon, “he is apt
to cling to it if possible. There is an
entrancement about it that one cannot
well analyze. The blood of the old
soldier of the sixties, thinned and
chilled by the passage of many years,
is warmed and invigorated by the news
Rom the battlefield and by such scenes
as this until he longs for the strength
of his youth and prime that he might
once more be in and of it. The blood
of the sires is in their sons, and these
young stars of ours will hate to go back
to the monotony and tedium of every
day civil life.” —Baltimore bun.

Cubans Ready to Fight Americans.
Washington, Aug. 16—Advices
received from Santiago de Cuba indi
cate that trouble with the Cubaus is
brewing. Their attitude is one of sul
len hostility toward Americans.
The better class in Cuba favor the
annexation of the island to the United
States aud a majority of the masses are
ready and anxious to work and accept
the shelter and protection afforded by
an American protectorate, but they are
influenced by a certain class of rabid
orators and breeders of sedition and
rebellion against anything smacking of
law and order.
This inflammatory class demands
and uiges the recognition of Cuba foi
Cubans and spurns all < ffers or sug
gestions teuding to prosperity under an
American protectorate aud excites
popular discontent. This is exactly
the class that pushes itself most into
evidence and whose views are most
overheard and published.
Their advice to the Cubaus is to re
pudiate all efforts of peace or a cessa
tion of hostilities aud to look upon au
armistice as an agreement between the
Uuiteu States and Spain on their own
account and not binding upou the free
and iadepeuderut State of Cuba, whose
liberating army not only repudiated
pacification, but will ignore the armis
tice to the point of continuing to wage
war aud shooting every Spaniard tu
the field.
A wild rumor is afloat to the effect
that the Cubau army will attack San
tiago and capture it, to the glory of the
Cubau arms, as soon as the American
garrison is weakened. This is directly
traceable to the same source.
The influeuce exerted by such a
body of meu against law aud order is
formidable. This hysterical people
demands suppression with an iron
hand. While still in embryo, this in
fluence is already felt among certain
classes, who refuse to work or serve
the government until a clear statement
of the freedom and independence to
their country is made.
A knowledge of this condition is im
perative to the moulding of future
policy and to explain whatever harsh
steps may be rendered necessary in
dealing with the insurgents.

There will be a rush of oapital into

Major McKinley’s Anecdote.
\\ hen President McKinley was
Msj. McKinley he once made an ad
dress in which he described the differ
ence between the American volunteer
and the soldier of other nations. The
men who were his comrades in the
civil war, he %aid, not only fought, hut
thought.
To illustrate this he related an anec
dote about a young soldier in some
northern regiment whose duty it was
to carry the regimental flag. Oa the
march the boy ran on ahead with the
flag streaming in the air. The colonel
was incensed. “Here!” he cried.
“Bring that flag back to the regiment!”
The boy turned and replied, “Aw,
you bring your regiment up to the
flag!”—Chicago Times-Herald.

Dig down to the cause of youi sick
ness, if you want to get well and stay
well. Most likely it’s indigestion. The
irritating poisous of fermenting, putrid
food, left in the stomach by indigestion,
cause headache, neuralgia, nervousness,
dizziness, stomachache, nausea, irrita
bility, aud all the other well known
symptoms of indigestion.
They also cause mauy pains and dis
orders which are often laid to other
causes and hence are not easily cured.
But as soon as the poisons are removed
all these symptoms aud disorders dis
appear, because there is nothing left to
cause them. Nothing succeeds in this
like Shaker Digestive Cordial, because
it prevents the undigested food from
fermenting in the stomach and helps
the stomach to digest its food. Sold
by druggists, price 10c to $1 a bottle.
