A Beet That Can’t Be Beat
And Peculiar Stalk of Corn
We - have recently had some
very interesting specimens of
corn. One of these was presented
by A. F. Bowden. It bad four
ears of corn on a stalk which pro
jected from the first joints above
the ground. One ear was fully
matured, the others were small.
We also had a very large beet
presented to us bv our good friend
John Carreker, which weighs 3%
pounds. Can you beat that beet.
This large beet reminded
a recitation we recited when a
small boy, entitled:
Mr, Finny Had a Turnip
Mr. Finny had ft turnip and it grew be
hind the barn,
And it grew, and it grew until it could
grow no taller.
Then Mr. Finny took it up and put it in
the cellar,
There it lay, there it lav until it began to
rot.
Then his daughter, Katie, washed it anu
put it into the pot,
And she boiled it, and she boiled it as long
as she was able,
Then his daughter, Lizzie, took it up and
put it on the table.
Then Mr Finny anu his wife, both sat
down to sup,
And they ate, and they ate, until they ate
that turnip up.

composing the convention was
