COURT CONVENES MONDAY.
Judge Roan Will Call Court to
Order -Heavy Docket.
Newton Superior Court will he
called to order Monday morning
at 9 o’clock with Judge L. S. Roan
presiding and Col. William Schley
Howard as State’s attorney.
This will be the biggest court
held in Covington in a dozen years.
A number of land suits will come
up, several big will cases in which
thousands of dollars are involved,
besides a number of claims, ap
peal and divorce cases which are
of no great general interest.
All next week will bj consumed
with the civil business, while the
criminal business will be taken up
the week following.
The criminul docket is heavy.
There are five murder eases for
trial and all of them with the pos¬
sible exception of one, will con
sume much time.
Beside the five murder cases
which will come up for trhl there
are forty-eight criminal warrants
in the hands of the clerk to go to
the graud jury. These, together
with the warrants the grand jury
will find will make by odds the
heaviest criminal docket in the
history of the county.
It is conservatively estimated
by Major Davis and the members
of the bar, that over two hundred
thousand dollars ($200,000) is in¬
volved in this court.
The contest in the Brown will
case involves about one hundred
thoi.sant dollars. Another will
case in which several thousand
dollars is involved is the Shepherd
Van Horne.
There are several land suits
which run into the thousands.
The civil docket which will be
disposed of next week follows:

Sunday Schools to Hold Institute.
The Sabbath School Institute,
under the auspices of the Presby¬
tery, will be held here October 9
and 10 in the Presbyterian church
Each Sabbath school in the bounds
of the Atlanta Presbytery is urged
and expected to send represen
tatives. held
The first session will be on
the evening of October 0 at 7
o'clock, and will consiat of devc
tional services, roll call and
rollmeut of representatives of

Lawson Wednesday morning just
below the Lithonia depot. Just
how the accident happened is not
known, but it seems that lie was
walking on the track just about a
emve in the road and before the
train could be stopped he vvas
struck run over and dragged
along the track.
His body was cut almost in two
and otherwise mangled. The train
crew brought the i-ody to the de¬
pot where it was turned over to his
people. He leaves three children.

The Corn Growing Contest.
To Corn Growing Contestants.
You will please gather your 20
ears of corn in the presence of a
disinterested person by October l.
It must be shucked, sacked and
nailed up in rat-proof box, and
brought to Covington not later
than October 7th, We shall pro¬
vide a room at the courthouse in
which to exhibit the corn.
It will be weighed on very sen¬
sitive scales, and the exact weight
marked on each lot. We shall
make a little copnty fair in the
exhibition of this corn on Monday
October 16. Corn will be exhibit¬
ed all day. Speaking will be from
10 to 12 m., after which the sev¬
eral prizes will be delivered.
Col. Livingston and others will
be invited to address the boys on
that day.
A largo crowd is expected to see
these fine lots of corn ra : sed by
the industrious boys of Newton
county.
You will please write out a9
much information as you can re¬
lating to time of planting, kind of
soil, distance, kind of corn, how
fertilized and what with, how cul¬
tivated, how many oars grew on a
stalk, and any other information
of interest. Each of you will de¬
serve credit for your effort in this
contest. We think the contest
means much for Newton county.
Be sure not to allow a single grain
shelled from your corn, Pull,
shuck, sack, box and bring to Cov
ington with above information in
the box not later than October 7.

Notice Ginners!
We have been requested to call
attention to the notice recently
issued to the Ginners and Cotton
planters by the Southeastern Cot¬
ton Buyers Association.
The notice is no more or less
than a warning to the ginnersjand
planters that in case the rules of
the Association regarding bagging
and ties are not complied with
that they suffer the loss. The as
sociation has given due notice that
a bale of cotton containing more
than six ties and six yards of bag
ging will not be bought by the

cotton at the gins, and the fact
that spinners had been billing
