INTERESTING LETTER
FROM WASHINGTON
Mr. W. S. Elliott Heartily En¬
dorses the Editorial of Last
Friday’s Issue.
Editors Enterprise: —As a
citizen of Newton county, though
sojourning some distance from her
borders, I desire to commend most
heartily the vigorous and timely
editorial relative to the preserva
tion of our forests, which appear¬
ed in your issue of last Friday.
This matter is a most vital one,
involving, ns it does, the retention )
of beauties of form and color with
which nature, has endowed the sur¬
face of our country, and the pros¬
perity of our people tor years to
eoine. It is true the preservation
of the green trees may cause the
average farm to yield less revenue,
at present, in dollars and cents,
bur, the pleasures of the cool,
shady groves cannot be re pur¬
chased at any price, once they are
destroyed. Will not spring-time
mean less to us when we have
lazed to the gound the forests,
whose thousands <>f quickening
twigs first tell us of its coming?
soughing pine, unaffected by win¬
ter’s cold or summer's heat, will
give us no sign.
And again, < ur country’s ma¬
terial well-being in the future de
p-nds, in large part, upon the
preservation of our forests. If we
destroy these great conservation of
moisture, will it he any wonder
if. in the years to come, there is
insufficient rainfall? Our people
now complain of occasion drouth
yet the destruction >f the forests
g>es PlHudiiy on. It seems to
most of us a matter of small im¬
portance to take an ax and destroy
n r few mome.its, a tree that the
g eat f >rces of nature huve been
years in building.
And the system of “farming » *
lands to impoverishment mid then
abandoning them tor newly clear
ed fields must «■ on reach its limit
Is it not the part of wisdom to
preserve at bast a large portion of
our forests that remain, and de¬
vote scientific efforts t * the task
of rehabilitating our so called
w»rnout areas?
Our people should have
discussion along this line and
should c-omejlo s one definite
by enactment < 1 forestry laws
otherwise, whereby tile
w odlands of our native state
be aayed from » ot:. 1 d-structmu.
Respect fully yours,
W. S. ELLIOTT,

TO THE VOTERS OF
NEWTON COUNTY:
In my card last week 1 chal¬
lenged my opponents to a series
of joint debates. For reasons
they did not meet me, but took
to the woods. I wanted to ask
them some questions and get
from them the things they stand
for.

Deak Enterprise —San Fran
cisco, one time the grandest city
in all the United States,beloved
by all who ever lived within her
borders, is tonight a smouldering
niass ot - ruins. Goldeu Gate Park
is crowded from bill to valley with
homeless and half .naked people,
al] bemoaning the loss of loved
ones. All of these people are half
starving for food and water. The
estimation of homeless people
tonight on the streets, in the park9
and on ihe sands of the seashore
attempting to sleep is 300.000.
I was slee ping peacefully at the
New Western Hotel on the morn¬
ing of the 18th. of April I was
awakened from my dreamy slum¬
bers by being thrown violently
from my bed and at the same time
having a shower of plastering fall
all over me while the house swayed
and rocked so badly for a few miu
utes that I could hardly stand .
I rushed down stairs to the office
which svus fast becoming * fillid
with badly frightened men women
and children. I started back to
my room to dress but as I was
ascending the stairs 1 heard a
roaring crash of falling brick and
timber just across the street and I
knew the hotel was liable to fall
at any minute so I rushed into the
streetwith t he rest of the thinly cl 4
guests taking my chances on being
frozen to »b'Hth rather than being
crushed under falling debris.
By this time theories of the
wounded and dying co uld be heard
m every haud. F'ires began to
spring up in all pmts of the city.
Chinese town totally destroyed and
th-re are toliight live thousand
Chinamen who are homeless.
Pitiful sights were presented on
every nand. I saw a mother have
the shapeless bleeding form of her
little babe in her arms, sittin on
the curbstone, singing and rocking
her little lov-d one to sleep, its
long sleep. The woman was en¬
tirely crazed by gri*f,
Magnificent buildings were

Those huivng teams are charging
the exorbitant price of $50 00 per
hour for their use. I saw loaves
of bread sell at 75c “ach, soda
crackers at 10c apiece.
The city is under martial law,
the soldiers have orders to shoot
all ghouls without warning.
