Dear Sir: We know what the
prints are all made-of, you know;
wc have to. In Wilson, N C, are
two dealers, One of ’em thinks
he can’t sell paint for more than $1
a gallon; the other won’t have such
Stull in his store—sells Devoe lead
antl-zmc. of course.
The $1 paint is adulterated
70%; Devoe is all lend and zinc
and linseed oil, with as little good
dryer as possible. A gallon De
voe has in it a little more paint
than four gallons of the other. A
gallon Devoe will cover as much
as four of the other. Who wants
to pay wages for painting four gal¬
lons tor one?
How much is Devoe lead-and
zinc worth in that town?

Another Reply to Self Reliance
Editor Enterprise—I have
been veiy much interested by the
articles written iiu your paper by
Mr. .T. C. Estes, (a id Mr. Self Re¬
liance, especially have I been en
terested in the last ones.
The first one written by Self Re¬
liance was good except the part
which advocated a dispensary in
Newton county; and I was glad
that that position which spoke of
a dispensary, aroused a spirit of
love for Newton county in Mr.
Estes, and that spirit prompted
him to make a reply, and express
it as he did. But in the last ar¬
ticle written by Self Reliance, in¬
stead of being fairly good, it was
silly and rediculous. For any man
to write an article for the purpose
of defending himself, and not to
have one bit of common sense
reasoning in it, and say nothing
but that Mr. Estes was weak above
the eyes, and say “that,” Until it
became absolutely w uoton-us; I
\y?sh to remi the pub
lie will i by what
„ -------,
is written, which has (lie greater
amount of sense. And more, I
wish to say Sn b-half of Mr. Es
tes, that, he being my class-mate
for twelve years, has alvvavs stood
at the head of his class, and is re
cognized by all who know him to
be a young man of a. strong mind
and noble character,
In the last article written by
Self Reliance, he said that a ma
j° rI ty of the best people of New
?on county were in favor of a dis
p nsary. Not saying anything
about “above the eyes,” but speak
• , .
inS 5 ’- sun,y and , . there is
!, °t ° n c iota of common sense in
that. For the sake of reasoning,
Self Reliance, don’t you know
that wh n a majority of the best
people in a ct mnty want anything
that county has it ? What cousti
tutes a county, Self Reliance ? Is
it boundary lines, rock and rivers ?
Certainly the majority of the best
people make our county, and do
you mean to say they can’t have
"bat they want ? Why, what an
absurdity !
L* you count your self worthy
your name, and have a great
majority of the best people with
you, why don’t you come out and

let the best people know who is
representing them ? If you want
a man in the legislature who will
carry your point, why don’t you
enter the race ? You say you have
the people with you ? Would
they support you? Then if you
have any ambition, you’ll be in
the legislature in a short time.
There are men in Newton county
who put their children to work
when they are so young that they
absolutely ruin their lives before
they are tiften years years old and
tiien want to turn them into a sa
loon when they are twenty-one.
There are men who want to wreck
and ruin the lives of three-fourths
of the young men in Newton conn
ty. There are men who are will
ing to sacrifice the lives of their
own children, and the lives of
many Christian fathers’ children,
just for one drink for himself.
There are men who haven’t any
more love or patriotism in their
hearts than to sacrifice the future
of onr county and state for a drink
of whiskey. For surely the
boys of today will control thi^
county in just a short time. And,
Self Reliance, this is you, if you
say you want'a dispensary. Are
you not ashaui^d—if not of your
telf—yout attiele.
But, dear old Newton, God bless
her, she never will have a dispen
sary—let her continue to have the
highest ideas—let her good and
great men continue to write. Let
Vr remain the best caunty in the
state. Then where advancement
must be made, her people will raise
their hearts high and sprint for
the goal.
