COVINGTON, GA. FRIDAY, JULY 27, 1906.
ATTEMPTED AS¬
SAULT ON WOMAN
By a Negro, Joe Ellis—He was
Captured in Western Part
of County by the Sheriff.
On last Saturday Sheriff Sam
Hay and deputy T. F. Maddox,
were hurriedly called to pursue
and capture a negro who it was
reported had attempted an assault
on a white woman, Mrs Belle
Knapp in the western part of the
county. The cffiicers with blood¬
hounds promptly went to the
scene and in a short time, the ne¬
gro, Joe Eliis was captured about
six miles from the Knapp home.
Ellis was brought to Covington
aud put in jail. Monday a pre
Jim inary rial was held before
Judge Cruse, and, after the en
deuce was introduced, the negro
was discharged, the evidence show¬
ing that he frightened the Knapp
family thinking that colored peo¬
ple lived at the place. The mis¬
take occurred because he had been
on familiar terms with his colored
friends who had recently moved
from the house, and who had
gone away without his knowledge.

ond Sunday in August, and lasts
one week. A capacious hotel will

dation. Large attendance is ex¬

Gilbert Henderson Killed.
G ilbert Hendeison, colored, of
Covington was killed by an East
bound freight train on the Georgia
RailrOhd near Scottdale Saturday
night. It is reported that he was
attempting to steal a ride when he
missed his hold falling under the
wheels of the train, being mangled
so that he had to be burned on the
right-of-way of the road.
Bud Miller, also colored, of Cov¬
ington, met the same fearful fate
over on the Seaboard Road, being
instantly killed while trying to
steal a ride. No blame can be at¬
tached to these roads. Gilbert
Henderson was a married man and
has five small children, and if he
had been at home looking after
and taking care of them, he would
not have met such a awful death.

HEAVY RAINS DAM¬
AGE THE CROPS.
Rains of last two weeks Damage
the Crops all over
the County.
The past two weeks have been
characterized by weathei probably
the most disastrous to the farmers
of Newton county that has occurr
ed this season. The crops could
have stood anything better than
rain, and unusual heavy precipi¬
tations have occurred over the en¬
tire county.
Glass, nourished by these rains
has secured a foothold almost all
over the county, and owing to the
scarcity of labor the farmers are
in a predicament, not only has the
cotton crop been seriouely dam¬
aged, but all other crops are in¬
jured to a great extent.
From all parts of the county re¬
ports come to the effect that the
crops have been seriously damaged
and there can be ^no doubt that
the output of the farming prod¬
ucts will be much smaller than
previous years.

enjoying- many games the guests
were served delicious ices and
cvkes. Those present were, Misses
Freidie Berman, Gusie Berman,
Mamie Cohen, Sadie Cohen, Min¬
nie Cohen, Maggie Perry, Annie
White, Florence Wells, Julia Aiken
Grace Whitehead, Lucy Bush,
Lucy Scruggs, Bernice Cook, La
cile Peek, Mary Willingham, I

Advertise !
Gov. Folk of Missouri delivered
a strong and helpful address to the
retail merchants of Jefferson City
the other day, in the course of
which he said: i i No merchant
cau succeed without advertising in
one way or another. Patronize
your town papers, build them up,
and they will build the town up,
and build up increased trade and
greater opportunities. Do not be
afraid that business is going to be
hurt by the recent exposures of
wrong-doing in the commercial
world. No man who is doing an 1
houest business can be injured by
the light. All business will be
better for the cleansing process it
is going through and for the
stamping out of evil.

COVINGTON TO
PLAY CONYERS.
A Series of Six Games Will be
Played—The first will be
Friday at 4 pm.
A series of six games of bail has
been arranged between Covingt on
and Conyers, to be played during
the next week-the first of which is
to be played on the home grounds
this Friday afternoon, at 4 pm.
These games promise to be hot¬
ly contested from the start, as
there is much rivalry between the
two teams. It will be remember¬
ed that the Conyers bunch took
the last game played between these
two teams, and Covington is go¬
ing atter this game with the goods.
The manifest rivalry between
these teams will no doubt draw a
lurgo crowd from all over the
county and also Conyers and Rock¬
dale.
Let the fans of Covington and
vicinity turn out and witness the
first game and “root for the home
boys. > J
In a double-header played here
Thursday of last week, Covington
defeated Jackson to the easy tune
of 7 to 1, and 5 to 3.
Stowers delivered the goods in
the first game, while Norman was
on the firing line in the second.
Makgum, of Atlanta, was in
the box for the visitors and pitch¬
ed both games.
