News readhed here Saturday

death of Mr. Graham occurred in
Mansfield while he was at work on
the residence of Mr. Elijah Camp¬

Mr. Graham was on The scaffold
near the second story of the house
and the scaffold gave way Mr.
Graham going with it. A block
of shingles fell on his head and
shoulders, crushing the life out of
him almost instantly.
Mr. Graham was a man of about
45 years of age and had lived in
Newton county all his life. He
was one of the most highly res¬
pected of our citizens. He leaves
a wife and several children to
mourn his loss.
The interment took place Sun¬
day under the auspices of Welau
nee Tribe of the Redmen. This
ceremony was a very beautiful and
appropriate one.

FARMERS INSTI¬
TUTE WILL MEET
At Covington, August 15th—It
Embraces 27th Sen¬
atorial Dist.
The Farmer’s Institute of the
27th Senatorial district will be
held at Covington this year. The
date named by President Coffee is
August 15th.
If the weather permits the meet¬
ing will be held at Academy
Springs, oherwise at the Court
House. Hon. P. D. Coffee has
worked unceasingly to give the
farmers an excellent program. A
glance at some of those who will
address the canvention will show
some of the best known public
men and women of the state, a
mong them are Mrs. VV. H. Felton
of Cartersville, B. Dixon Arm¬
strong of Ala., R. I. Smith, At¬
lanta, last is Newton’s own Un¬
cle Lon.
The Farmers Institute is a state
affair, its expenses are paid by the
state, it is yours as well as ours, it
is meant to help the farmer in his
business, to aid him in studying
his crop. That being true it is
the duty of every farmer to attend
this meeting.
The President says “tell the
boys to come, bringing Polly and
the children with them. The kid
can chase lizards and the old
folks listen and learn. Start ear¬
ly, drive fast and stay late.
The grounds will be in charge
of Hon. F. D. Ballard.
All farmers m good standing
bring well filled baskets.
Death of Lander Weber.
It is with sadness that we an¬
nounce the death of Lander, the
infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L.
Weber. The little fellow came to
stay only a short time. God in
his inscrutable w isdom saw fit to
remove him to a fairer and happier
world than this. In the very bud
of his existence, he was plucked
from his home garden here to be
transplanted in the skies, where we
shall see Miim again, iu all the
beauty and glory’of aneyeles9 life.
May God bless and keep these
parents until the glad reunion.

The State Road Lease.
T here is now pending in the
Georgia Legislature a bill provi¬
ding for the lease of the State road
for period of sixty years. We
hope that this bill will be turned
down by our legislature; we see
no need of leasing this magnifi¬
cent property at this time.
The present] lease contract does
not expire in thirteen years, then
why be in haste?
The Legislature will be >n ses¬
sion every year till then, so
the opportunity to lease will not
be lost by turning down this bill.
Th^- people are opposed to the pro¬
posed lease.

WRITES A CARD
the Executive Committee of
The Democratic Party
of Newton County:
Gentlemen: 1 was much aston¬
to read last, week in a copy
the Walton Tribune that the
Convention for the
of the next State Sena¬
from this district bad been held
July 28th, at Athens.
Your honorable body had ap¬
me as one of the represen¬
of Newton to attend that
when called, and I had
my affairs wo t hat I could
so* Two otlnr appointed dde
expressed to me, in conver¬
several weeks since, their
of attending the conven¬
tion when it should lie called.
The Tribune’s account of tho
convention rays: The call cf the
counties revealed the fact that all.
were represented except the coun¬
ty of Newton.”
Is it possible that the Newton
county representatives were net
notified of the time and place of
the convention? I certainly was
not. My first knowledge of either
was obtained from the Walton
Tribune.
The delegates from Newton were
charged by the Democrats in mas?
meeting assembled with present¬
ing to that convention a resolution
concerning the method of select¬
ing the Senator from this district
iu the future, which resolution
V'SS adopted by the mass meeting,
after considerable debate, with but

taut body of the State, not only by
reason of its legislative functions,
but also by reason of the fact that
it has the great prerogative of
confirmation ot rejection of very
many of the State’s officials, as
well as its high powers as a Court
of Impeachment.
That this county should have
been deprived ot representational
this last convention which nomi
nated our representative to this
high body shows either gross care
lessness or extreme discourtesy on
the part ot some one.
As an appointee ot your honora¬
ble body I render you my excuse
for not executing tho trust you
committed to my charge,
Respectfully,
H. H. Stonb,
