ANNOUNCEMENT.
On February 1st. of the present
year, Col. E. R. Gunn and myself
as promoters of the Enterprise
Publishing Company took charge
of The Enterprise ns editors and
managers until a charter could be
secured and the company organiz¬
ed. Since then all the stock has
been sold, and the business of the
company has been carried on as
was announced.
While in charge of the paper we
have endeavored to keep it up to
the standard which Mr. Smith, the
former editor, had built it, and al¬
so went to extra expense to en¬
large the news and oth^r features.
We have devoted much of our
time in its publication with the
view that Covington and Newton
county deserve a wide-awake week¬
ly. From the many compliments
which we have recieved, we feel
that our efforts have been success¬
ful, and we wish in turn to thank
our friends for their interest and
encouragement.
Though we have changed the
form of the paper somewhat dur¬
ing the so-called dull season, the
Enterprise is entering the fall
months with the preparation to
issue the paper in an attractive and
up-to-date style. From this issue
Col. Gunn takeH charge as editor
and manager, and I pass the edi¬
torial quill over to him, once again
to give my entire attention to my
law office.
In assuming the responsibilities
of The Enterprise, Col. Gunn, as
he announced two weeks ago, has
entered the journalistic field in
earnest. He is especially qualified
for the work, and has a conscien¬
tious regard concerning the duties
and obligations of journalism. He
is ready to serve the public in its
best interests, and we trust that
his^ffbrts will be aided and ap¬
preciated by a generous patronage
of a progressive town and county.
A newspaper is usually issued in
accordance with its patronage,
and the progress of a community
is measured by the standard of its
newspapers.
I wish to say that during the
short time I have been connected
with The Enterprise, I have be¬
come more in touch with the peo¬
ple of the county, and am more
than ever solicitous for their wel¬
fare and prosperity, and I shall re¬
member with pleasure the editori¬
al experience which I have under¬
gone. While I shall not from this
issue be regularly engaged with the
paper, I shall probably from time
to time be a contributor to its col¬
umns and do what I can to help
make it a factor of usefulness to
Covington and Newton County.

It is the platform adopted by the
people.
Hon. Hoke Smith made a mag¬
nificent speech occepting the nom¬
ination.
