The Poor Man’s Show.
When our old deceased friend,
Hon. Weldon Price represented
K)conee county in the legislature,
Lome [e twenty-five years or more ago
introduced a bill to tax circuss

Georgia. (editing We at that time and was

B Blhe circus is today, it has al
BBf s n, and ever will be, the
poor man’s show. We say let ’er
roll! While of course a circus
takes some money out of a com¬
munity, they also scatter vast sums
along their route; and we do not
suppose there is any other luxury
that yeilds such a rich return for
their receipts. What it a circus
does disorganize labor for a few
ds-ys, as has been'efa.nr^i? Well,
those country people need and
should have some rest, and it tlmy
want to spend a while talking
about the circus, it is their own
business and nobody else’s.
contend that the poor white folks !
and darkeys have just as much
right to have their circus once a
year, as the residents od our cities
have to be entertained night after
night, through an entire season,
with high-priced theatrical per¬
formances. If the state is going
to legislate against the poor man’s
show, let it also legislate agairs
these numberless shows especially
organized for the entertainment of
the rich man.
We are glad to see so many of
our country friends enjoy the cir¬
cus and we enjoy it with them.
We had free tickets, while they
must pay. But even were admit
fance twice what it was, we would
freely have forked over the cash
just to stand in the tent and watch
the beaming, happy faces of the
vast audience. We all enjoy the
circus for it is a good show r , and
,
we can talk about it, and think
over it, for weeks to come. While
we town folks will have other
things to direct our attention, those
people living out in the country
can have food for gossip for many
a long winter night to come.
When Georgia legislates out cir
cusses, we s hall demand that it not
stop at the poor man’s show r , but.

Not Betrothed—Just Waisting.
"If there is anything I like it is
a good joke,” said a well known
club man. At a dinner the other
night I heard a well-known wit,
chuckling a good deal, repeat an
Americanism that he said he had
heard that day.
"A philanthropic lady, he said,
one of those ldd.'“s whose delight
is to do good, summoned a pa Hu/
maid, and said earnestly:
Jane, I take a great interest in
your welfare. Now tell me, is
there anything serious between
you and the grocer’s delivery man

< ( l Keeping company? Do you
meau by that old phrase that you
are betrothed?’
i < t No ma’am, not yet. We’ve
only got as far as waisting. •

His Point of View
“The members of the clan known
as the ‘drummers’ have a habit of
steering each other to certain ho¬
tels in the town where accomma
dations are good and the prices
reasonable,” said a traveling man,
according to the Birmingham
News. He was seated with a
group of “knights of the grip’’
who had been telling stories that
could be repeated in the most po
lite society, Not long ago a
friend ot mine, an agent for a
New Orleans house, hit a town in
Mississippi at the same time that
another traveling man arrived.
The two got, acquainted on the
way up town, and the other drum
mer suggested that a certain hotel
was l < the best.” My friend ac
companied him, and when seated
at the dining table a little later
he turned to his new friend and
said:
“Did you say this was the best
hotel in M— ?”
“Yes, sir. No doubt of it.”
“Well,” said my friend, “I am
glad we stopped here. If we had
gone to any ot the others, we
would certainly have starved to
death.”
