Memorial Day Orator.
Memorial Day, April 26, will be
celebrated in Covington under aus¬
pices of the United Daughters of
the Confederacy, and in selecting
an orator for the date that the
noble women of the South have
designated as a day to commemo¬
rate the valor of the greatest sol¬
diers the world has ever seen, they
have chos Q n a gentleman in every
way capable of filling the appoint¬
ment to the entire satisfaction of
all—Hon. R. E. Park, of Atlanta,
Georgia’s popu'ar ai.d efficient
state treasurer.
The great celebration here last
April, when the magnificent Con¬
federate monument lr the center
of the public square was unveiled,
is still fresh in the memories ot
our people, and one and all eagerly
look forward to a glorious occasion
on the 26th.
Capt. C. W. Powell and John H.
Echols will be Marshals of the
Day.
Mrs. Aiken Passes Away.
Mrs. Carrie -\iken. widow of the
late Dr. Robt S. Aiken, died at
Stewart, in the southern portion of
the county, Thursday night of last
week at the age of 69 years.
Funeral services were conducted
at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon by
Rev. Firley Baum, the interment
being in the family burial ground
at Stewart.
Mrs. Aiken is survived by five
sons and two daughters. Two of
the daughters reside here —Mrs.
Lige Mining iu the city, and Mrs.
Blanche Peek at Oxford
Judge Coggins Dead
Judge G. W. Coggins, one of
Leguin district’s prominent citi
zens, and well known throughout
the county, died last Friday morn
ing after an illness of several
months' He was about 40 years
of age and unmarried.
Convention of Stone
Mountain Baptists.
The Stone Mountain Baptist As
sociation convened with Salem
Baptist church, Rockdale county,
last Friday and continued through
Sunday. Rev. J J. Stephenson
preached the introductory sermon
and the meeting throughout was a
most interesting and enjoyable one.
Several ministers and about fifty
laymen, representing the churches
composing the third district, were
in attendance.
* Sale Day Tuesday.
Quite a number of the country
folk were in town Tuesday, sher¬
iff’s sain day.
The Grave* plantation, compos¬
ing 1,200 acres of improved farm¬
ing land m Brickstore district, was
sold to the highest bidder. The
property belonged to the estate of
the late Henry L. Graves and was
bid in by his widow. Price paid
was $36,000, or $30 per acre.
Several other valuable pieces of
land were offered and sold..
Valuable Old Violin.
Capt. I. D. Brisendine, one of
the Central of Georgia’s popular
conductors, and who resides in
Covington, has in his possassion a
valuable violiu nearly 200 years
old. It is said to have originally
cost $500, and was imported before
the American revolution by one
°f Capt. BrUeudine’s aucestors,
and has been handed down from
several generations of the family.

The marriage of Miss Annie
Kate Dick to Rev. J. B. Salter,
which wli* to have occurred March
21, at the home of the bride’s un
cle, Mr. W. A. James, at Sylves
ter, has been postponed till a later
date on account of the death of
Miss Dick’s grandfather, Mr. A.
G. Jones, of Clopton. Ga.

Move Fo Stamville.

ville this week, where he will taka

P Lodge, came up Monday night
to assist the Covington lodge iu
conferring the rank of Esquire on
several candidates. The Newborn
members are very enthusiastic
workers, and are ajways welcome
