Senator Tillman would lika to
see a Southern man nominated by
the Democrats for president, but
thinks he will have to content
himself with ’‘Culberson of Texas,
Hoke Smith of Georgia, or Daniel
of Virginia,” for the second place
on the ticket. •
All these able and honest Demo¬
crats are quite fit to aspire to the
presidency. The nominee for
vice-president should always
measure up to the standard fixed
for president, for in the future
as in the oast the vice-president
may be called upon to serve as
president.

Conductor A. H. Ellington.
Editor Daily Sun:
With your permission I’d like to
speak through your columns of
the elegant gentleman whose
heads this article. Thousands of
people know Capt. Ellington, and
I feel safe in saying that all of
them admire him and are his
friends. He is the apostle of
mirth and sunshine on the rail,
and the joys of Illinois Central
Railroad passengers are always
heightened when they realize that
they are going to ride on the train
of this courteous and courtly man
lpulator of railroad tickets and
fares. Whether it be the aged and
decrepit grandmother, the bashful,
untraveled maiden, the afflicted
en route to some distant home,
the newly-married, couple reveling
in the joys of a happy honey-moon
the sorrowful of heart, or the sun¬
ny-haired, sweet-faced little girl—
all are happy when they see the
smiling face and hear the cheery
voice of this much-loved condint
oc and know that they are to re
cieve fatherly and polite attention,
For one I want to place flowers in
the haud of Capt. Ellington while
he yet iives, and not wait until be
is dead to place floral offerings
on his grave when their beauty
and fragrance can do him no
good. Long live Capt. Ellington
the courtly knight of the rail, and
may sunshine and happiness ever
be his portion in life.
G. B. Daws,
Medina, Tenu., April 18th. 10GT
The subject of the above sketch
is a former Newton county citizen ■
and his friends here will be de-l
lighted to learn of the high esteem!
in which lie is held by the people !
at his Tennessee home and along
the route of the'great Illinois Cen-;
tral railroad. Capt. Ellington has j
several brothers and sisters in this
county. One brother, Mr. S. P_.
Ellington, resides near Oxford.
