A Woman’s Heroism, or The
Plucky Pale Face Squaw.
The above named story, which
was published in the Enterprise
last week, vv.s formerly written
by Mr. Hal A. Rhodes.

jiovd, that it won for him a vast
multitude of friends who were
loyal t him for a out 75 years of
Ins life, which was spent in Cov
ington and Newton county. He
represented the county in the
Georgia legislature, and was also
sheriff for many years. He was a
charter member of Bethany church
(Newton county) named by him
for his mother’s church in Greene
countv. He lived to see his child¬
ren, grand children, great grand
children, and great great grand
children received into the church
where he loved to worship.
It w:is an existing custom for
many years for the relatives of
this little boy, who had now grown
to be an aged man, to congregate
at his home and spend the day on
his birthdays. Greatly did the
children, of which the writer of
this article was one, enjoy the din¬
ners thev partook of on thosedays.
The relatives were anticipating
a pleasant day on October 18, 1900,
which was to be his 98th birthday,
but a few days before that date a
terrible malady set in and ended
tlie life of this great aud noble
man. He was known to the citi¬
zens of Newton county as “Uncle
Alfred Livingston, ) J Truly could
it have been said by the host of
friends that were present to wit¬
ness the funeral solemnities of this
man:
None knew thee but to love thee,
None knew thee but to praise.

Covington Loses Opening
Game of Season.
The U. S. B. baseball team, led
by coach Sibley, came down from
Stone Mountain Monday and met
the Covington team at the ball
park in the afternoon at 4 o’clock.
Despite the fact that the home
team was playing its first game of
the season, while the mountain
boys have been playing regularly
for the past two months,Covington
would have defeated the visitors
easy enough had the umpire seen
and called out a mountain runner
who cut third base by twenty feet
and scored when two men were out
in the fifth inning. Up to tifis in
niug the sc<>re stood 1 and 1, but
failure to put the runner out was
against the nerves of the home
team aud the mountain scored six
runs in that inning. The score at
the close of the game was 9 to 8 in
favor of the visitors.
Norman was in the box for Cov
ington aud pitched splendidly for i
theTirst try this season. Sim- (
mons did the receiving act in great
style. Noruian allowed eight scat¬
tered bits, struck out 10 men and
walked 3. Goldsmith twirled for
Stone Mountain and tried to tool
the boys with his long-arm deliv¬
ery, but as he couldn’t throw any¬
thing much but straight balls, was
comparatively easy. He allowed
10 hits, had 7 strikeouts to his
credit and gave 3 bases on balls.
The result of Monday’s game has
not discouraged the home boys in
the least, and they will go into the
next game with renewed vigor and
play winning ball.
