RAPID GROWTH
OF COVINGTON,
Bonds For Improvements—Re¬
markable is the Deve*op
ment of Newton County.
Covington, Ga , Jun u , 1, (Spec¬
ial )—'The action of the cit v coun¬
cil in unanimously passing 11 reso
lution calling for a bond election
for the issiirance of $50,000 of
bonds for the establishment of
water works and street improve¬
ments is one of the many evidences
of the progressive and growing
spirit that movtd this thrifty lit 11 “
city. There is practically no op¬
position to these bands, the citi
zens being a unit upon meeting
the needs which th“ growth of the
town produce.
The proposed issue of bonds
for water works and street imprme
metits »s only one of a series of
public improvements which have
been or soon to be inauguiated.
There is a modern electric light¬
ing plant already in operation
as well as such substantial piivute
enterprises as a chair factory, an
ice factory and buggy and wagon
manufactories, as well as other in¬
dustrial enterprises of equal nec¬
essity in providing for the public
comfort.
Unusual development in the
line of erection of new buildings
has not only taken place as a re¬
sult of the thrift and enterprise
of Covington’s citizens, but also
to meet a demand of an impera¬
tive nature by reason of the sub¬
stantial and steady growth of the
city. Within the last few months
the demand for homes has been
■tin precedented, and such public
spirited men as Hon. E. O. Lee,
Dr. N. Z. Anderson and others
have invested large sums in homes
for the many new people who wish
to take up their residence in Cov
iugton. As many as thirty or
forty suitable for homes for the
substantial class of good people
coming into the town, are now 111

bourse of erection, and will read

potion. There is not today a va
cant dwelling or business house in
the city, and the demand fur homes
cannot be supplied.
The merchants of Covington
ate doing a large and profitable
business; the three banks, as evi
denced by late statements issued
1 by them, are in a most prosperous
condition. The cotton mills, con
siiming annually mote than 25,000
bales "f cotton, are enjoying an
unusual degree of substantial pros
perity.
Covingtonians are*keeping pace
with the general prosperity and
material progress evidenced in the
various lines of endeavor. Fot*
tw> years past the Schools havp
been under the direct supervision
aud control of Superintendent A1
H Foster, under whose tnabage
meat the rebools have reached a
high degree of efficiency and use¬
fulness. The high school build
lias * been »• completely "14 out- ' ■
tug
grown and the facilities do not
do not meet the requitements.
This fact being recognized, the
Imilding is to be enlarged during
the coming summer at a cost of
$5,000 or m< re.
Among the many und*rtakings
which are planned for the near
future are a $ 10,000 Cai n -gie lib¬
rary, steam laundry, an oil mill,
a new Baptist Church, etc. The
plans for the church have been
drawn and accepted, and will up
resent an investment of $15,0C0.
Subscriptions are now being taken
for the construction of a public
auditorium at Academy Springs,
one of the delightful park resorts.
At this Auditorium, conventions
will be held and public gatherings
in the ihterest of schools, and it is
expected that a movement will
soon be started for the holding of
an annual summer Chautauqua
t lie re also.
The Farmer’s Union Warehouse
and Supply Company, represent¬
ing an investment of perhaps
$15,00C, has just been organized,
THE ENTERPRISE, COVINGTON GA
and a charter applied for. Be
I hind all these undertakings the
leading citizens of Covington are
putting their best brain and effort
and the men who are launching
these enterprises are known to
carry to a successful conclusion
whatever they undertake,
During the last half of the pres
e .)t year it is expected that re
markable development will take
place in and around Covington,
Magiuficient, water power lies but
a short distancefrom the city, and
it is highly probable that some of
them will be developed before the
end of the present year. There
are some 15,000 horse-power avail
able in this immediate vicinity,
When these valuable water-tails
are harnessed the manufacturing
interests of Covington and vicini
ty will certainly lie stimulated,
ai ,d the proposed electric railway
connecting Covington with Porter
dale, Oxford, Walnut Orove, Mans
field, Newborn, and other neigh- .
boring towns and villages will be
« reality as a natural result sooner
