SCHOOL BOARD
ELECTS TEACHERS.
Covington Public School Faculty
Chosen for 1907-08 Session
...School in Splendid
Condition.
At a recent meeting the Board
of Trustees of the Covington pub¬
lic school elected the following
teachers for the ensuing year:
Prof. J"hn S. Allen, of Holly
Springs, Miss., was chosen super¬
intendent, He conies highly re
commended and will, no doubt,
continue the good work which
Prof A H^Fostcr has been doing
during his superintendency the
past two years.
Miss Lucy May Flewellen, of
Union Springs, Ala., and Miss Ro¬
berta Fox, of Louisville, Ga., suc¬
ceed Misses Gardner and Hender¬
son, who did not again apply.
The teachers re-elected are as
follows: Miss Ackie White and
Mrs. J. E. Phillips, of this city;
Miss Susie Watts, Flovilla; Miss
Bessie Ezell, Monticello; Miss
Anna Keith, South Carolina.
The enrollment last year was
more than 300, and the proposed
enlargement of the school building
would be of great benefit to the
school and the city.
The school was never in a bet¬
ter condition and the prospects
are bright for a successful term
this fall.
The citizens of Covington are
aware ot the many advantages and
inestimable value of a good school
and may be couuted on to give it
their best wishes and hearty sup
port.

Waterworks Survey.
Messrs! L Wolfe and J C Cook,
representing J B McCrary & Co.,
of Atlanta, are here making a
thorough survey and drawing a
map of the. c ty for the purpose of
ascertaining the cost of installing
the waterworks system for Cov¬
ington.
These gentlemen are thoroughly
efficient in their lines, and within
the next few days will finish their
survey and turn over to the city
council the exact figures of cost
of installation of the system.
The citizens are becoming thor¬
oughly aroused to this question
and are fast realizing that water¬
works is a necessity forCovingtcn.
It is generally understood that
within the next few days the Coun¬
cil will call an election for the is¬
suing of bonds to the amount of
-150,000 lor waterworks and the
improvement of the city’s property.
Odd Fellows Elect Officers.
At the regular meeting of Star
Lodge, No. 1*54, I. O O. F. held
111 the Masonic Hall, Thursday
night, June 6 th, the following
officers were elected for the ensuing
term :
J. J. Corley, Noble Grand; A.
H. Foster, Yice Grand; J. W T .
Peek, Recording Secretary.
This lodge is among the flourish¬
ing fraternal orders of our city,
and each member takes special in¬
terest in the meetings and the up¬
building of the lodge.

Special Services.
A series of Sunday sermons on
I t Confession of Sin” were begun
at the Baptirt church last Sunday
by the pastor—typical sinners of
the Bible who said, “I 1 h a v e
sinned.” The first one was “Pha¬
raoh, the hardened sinner.”
Next Sunday at 11 a. m. “Ba¬
laam, the double-minded sinner, > f
and “Adian, the doubtfully peni¬
tent sinner,” will be the two
themes.

DEATH TAKES
JOHN A. WIMPY.
Well Known Attorney Passed
Away at Midnight at
Daughter’s Home,
in Atlanta.
John A. Wimpy, the well j
known attorney, died at the home |
of his daughter, Mrs. Frances Me
Candless in Atlanta Monday
night.
Col. Wimpy was born in East
Tennessee in 1837, and soon there
after he came to Georgia, and
when a young man began the
practice of law.
A few years ago Mr. Wimpy
sufferod a stroke of paralysis, and
for the past several months has
been in a helpless condition, and j
liis death was not unexpected.
He is survived by his widow
and six childrae: Warren Wimpy
of New York city; Charles Wimpy
of Florida; Erskine Wimpy, of
Atlanta; Mrs. Fiances McCand
less, of Atlanta; Miss Grace Wim¬
py, of New York city; and Miss
Bertie Wimpy, of Atlanta.
The funeral services were held
Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock
at the residence of hi^ daughter,
Mr. McCandless, Dr. French offi¬
ciating. The body was brought
to Oxford on Thursday morning
for the interment.
Mr. Stillwell An Embalmcr.
Mr. W. R. Stilwell lias returned
from Augusta, where he graduated
at the Southern College of Em¬
balming. He will be associathd
in the future with R. E. Everitt’s
undertaking establishment.
Mr. Stillwell uu>de a fine record
this college, sharing first honor
with one of the students, both bav
ing made 100 in their examina¬
tion. He has a large number of
friends here who will read of his
success with pleasure.

All-Day Singing Postponed.
I he all-day singing which was
to have been he'd at Salem Camp
Ground the 3rd Saturday in June,
wil' not be held on that day.
There will be an all-day singing
held at Macedonia Baptist church,
f*>ur miles north of Oxford, on the
Third Sunday in JLLY, beginning
0 o clock, a m.

Protracted Meeting.
The Baptist congregation has se¬
cured the aid of Rev. Raleigh
Wright, one of the new appointees
for the direction of evangelism
within the Southern Baptist Con¬
vention, to assist in a protracted
meeting to b^gin June 23rd.
Mr. Wright was recently used in
a great meeting in Mobile and is
now engaged 111 a meeting at
Brunswick.
The Baptist pastor was fortunate
enough to secure this man (though
be was m demand among the huger
churches) for the date above men¬
tioned.
Mrs. I. R. Roberts Dead.
Mrs. Ida R. Roberts, wife of the
late J. M. Robeats, of this city,
died at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. R. L. Loyd, on Friday.
Mrs. Roberts was at the time ot
death, seventy-five years of age.
She was in her usual health when
she arose Friday morning, and af¬
ter being up and assisting in her
accustomed house work, lay down
for a short rest, and within a lew
moments was seized with heart
failure and died.
The funeral services were con¬
ducted from the residence on Sat¬
urday and the remains laid to rest
in West. View cemetery.
To the bereaved we extend our
deepest sympathy in this their sad
hour.
