The Quest.
Ah real less soul, the search is vain,
And yet in nvngled joy and sorrow,
In pleasure mixed with pain,
I follow on in feverish haste the
endless quest
For perfect peace and happiness.
How many times in this waking
dream of life
My wounded spirit, bruised and
broken m the strife,
Has flown to heights and depths
unknown
And there for one brief moment
found—a quiet home.
Ah, anxious heart! the goal is un¬
attained,
Today is but tomorrow' and yes¬
terday the same.
And yet I love the chase,
For tho the loss is equal to the
gain I revel in my cherished
dreams
Of what the future holds,
Of what the past has been,
And now and then I glean a mem¬
ory which death itself can¬
not erase.
How many times in this one little
day
My heart’s ideal has lured me
away,
And on some calm Arcadia stand,
Some love-enchanted Eden land,
I heard the music voice and felt
your veteran hand.
Ah, vain eyed hope! the Quest
outruus infinity.
I fain would drown my heart in
love and sink my soul in
realms above with with its
divine affinity,
And yet in hunger (hirst.
Kind human heart, I yearn to
taste your fondest love
And drink your tenderest sympa¬
thy. —Author Unknown.
