Miss Eva Lioyd, who is spend¬

place in the high school at Fort
Valley.
Mr. J. R. McCord, a popular and
energetic young man of this city,
has received an appointment as
railway mail clerk. As yet he has
no regular run but will do “sub”
work for awhile on the different
lines in Georgia, Alabama, Missis¬
sippi and Louisiana.
Mr. Willie Cook has charge of
the laundry business represented
by the late L. A. Clarke. He is
doing work for a laundry with an
established reputation. A satisfied
customer is the best customer, and
he has scores of them to testify to
the merits of bis work.
Capt. Claud Norton, a popular
conductor on the Central of Geor¬
gia railroad between Macon and
Athens, 19 spending his summer
vacation with his mother, Mrs. H.
E. Norton, in Midway. His many
frjends here are glad to see him
and to learn of his rapid rise in
raiiroad circles.
Miss Lora Harris, of Ringgold,
Ga., has been chosen a teacher in
the Covington puplic school for
the coming year in the place of
Miss Lucy May Flewellen, of
Union Springs, Ala., who was
elected to a position a short time
ago but did not accept.
Mrs. R. C. Guinn has as her
guest her cousin, Miss Susie Me
Gruder, of Orlando, Fla. Miss
McGruder has been attending the
Lewisburg College in Virginia, and
stopped by on her return home.
She is very attractive and accom¬
plished. Mrs. Guinn entertained
delighttully in her honor on Thurs¬
day evening.
Mr. W. R. Stilwell went to At¬
lanta Monday and stood an exami¬
nation for embalmer’s licence be¬
fore the Georgia State Board ot
Embalming. It is very gratifying
to Mr. Stilwell’s numerous Cov¬
ington friends to know that he
passed a mo*t creditable examina¬
tion, and he is now in charge of
the undertaker’s department at Mr
R. E. Everitt’s.
Prof. G. C. Adams, of Coving¬
ton, Walton’s new citizen and the
superintendent of the Fifth con¬
gressional agricultural college, is
in the city. The pi .pose of his
visit is to look into matters with
reference to the erection of his
residence at the eollege sue. Mon

Miss Frances Godfrey has as her
guests, Misses Susie Hatcher, of
Columbus; Emily Cassia, of At
lauta, Annie Erwin, of Madison,
and Annie White, of this city,
and they are being very delight¬
fully entertained. Misses Marga¬
ret Sparks and Elizabeth Walton,
of Brunswick, who were to have
been present, found it impossible
to come until late. The following
entertainments have been and are
to be given in honor of the at¬
tractive guests: Miss Frances God¬
frey with a peanut stab on Tues¬
day; Miss Florence Wells, a straw
ride on Wednesday; Miss Annie
White, a picnic Thursday; Miss
Janie Gaither, an ai tresoo party
today; Miss May Belle Clark, a
lawn party Saturday ; M iss Leonora
Maddox, a luncheon next Monday,
and on Tuesday the girls will leave
for their respective homes.
Off For The Philippines.
Miss Frances Cooley, sister of
Editor Jas. I*. Cooley, left Wed¬
nesday for the Philippines, where
she goes to accept a position in the
city schools of Manila.
She has two brothers in Manila,
Messrs. J. B., and J. K. Cooley,
one ir. the secret service of the
government and the other in the
mercantile business. She has a
lucrative position, and will have
charge of the English branches in
the school.
For the past year she has taught
the Salem school in this county.
She *s a graduate of Leesviile col¬
lege, S. C., and Meridian Female
college, Meridian, Miss.
Miss Dunlap, a niece of Judge
Southworth, will accompany her.
They are scheduled to arrive in
Manila August 15th.
They will stop over for a few
days in Honolulu, Hong Kong,
China, and Tokio, Japan.
Covington Ladies Take Part.
In an entertainment which took
place at the opera house in Eaton
ton on Thursday night for the ben
efit of the parsonage of West Put¬
nam circuit, Misses Annie, Flora
and Clara Carr, of this city, and
Leonora Owslov, of Atlanta, took
part, rendering special musical
features of the program. The
young ladies were chaperoned by

spend several days in the Putnam
county capital.

Mr. Pickett Visiting Parents.
Mr. \V. H. Pickett, jr. of Brush,
Col. arrived in the city Thursday,
to be the guest ot his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. W. H. Pickett, for sever¬
