THE ENTERPRISE, COVINGTON GA
New Position For Girls.
The sins of the office boy have
iescended upon his head at the
American Trading Company,
where since Monday there have
been five fewer of his kind in the
cify. And this is only the begin
ing. Unless the girls who have
filled the five vacant places disap¬
point the expectations of every
one concerned, twenty-five more
boys will find their doom
sealed before any great length of
time. Those only will find salva¬
tion who are needed to catch
j | steamers. A girl obviously can
not be expected to tear down
Wall Street with a letter for a
steamer scheduled to sail in five
minutes. Neither could one say
to her, as one of the managers re¬
marked yesterday: t * Hey, there,
I Katy, beat it to the steamer with
! this letter. » 7
‘‘Perhaps she would run just
as fast w ithout such admonitions”
suggests the reporter.
“That is true, > 7 remarked the
manager. “ When you ask a girl
to do a thing she does it immedia¬
tely. A boy hangs around and
does it when he gets ready. A
boy will sometimes keep a pack¬
age of letters before he conies
them. 7 7
The girls were first tried in the
filing department, where the work
had formerly been dona by boys,
and they were such a success that
the head of the mailing depart¬
ment, who happened to be a wo¬
man, said sue wanted to try girls

Exceedingly low rates have
been authorized by the Southern

Stop-overs will be. allowed on
season, sixty day and fifteen day,
tickets, same as granted on Sum¬
mer Tourist Tickets. Tickets
will be sold daily commencing on

The Southern Railway is taking
a very great interest in this Exp- -

in their power to promote its wel
fare for the reason that it is locat¬
ed on historic and Southern
Grounds, and has evidence of
being one of the most impor
ta.it and attractive affairs of this
kind that has ever been held.
Through train service and sleep
ing car service to Norfolk during
the exposition has not yet. been
announced, but it is expected
that most excellent schedules will
be put in effect so as to make the
trip comfortable and satisfactory

a little more time fixing their hair
and adjusting their collars than
the boys did, but that kind

Furtliertnoie, the girls were a lit

more difference than it does later <
on. They were paid better wages
than the boys, because it was
found tliat they were willing to
stay in their place for a while and
didn’t demand a raise every six
mouth-*, after the fashion of office
boys. Thus the inconvenience of
constant changes are avoided
which was probably the weightiest
consideration of all.
No girls have yet been asked to
run errands, but the firm thinks
they are qualified to do
thing that a boy does, with the
sole exception of cutching steam

U. S. Treasury Department liae
officially decided that tobacco is**
necessity ai d nor, a luxury. The
case came up in an appeal to the

for tobacco for s< me laborers wh*

life within the meaning of the act.
The decision went on to t-ay that
tobacco, esjncoil’y to the laboring
classes, was so much a part oi
their regular ration that it must
be ranked as a necessity, and the
item was allowed in the account.
The Treasury is called on to
render a number of interest ing de-*
