Meanest Man Found.
To the Editor of The State :
I have struck him at last. The
meanest man on the face of the
earth lives in Fargo, North Dakota
North Dakota, as you probably
knovv, is a prohibition State.
Minnesota is “wide open, y y Far
gods on one aide of the Red River
in Dakota and Moorehead is on
the other other 111 Minnesota, with
a good bridge to facilitate inter¬
course and any amount of free
drunks. A married man of Far
go w33 in the habit of crossing this
bridge frequently, much to the de¬
pletion of his pocket-book and
bis good wife’s desires. A bright
idea came to her and she said :
“John, I am going to lay in a
stock of whisky, and every time
you want a drink I want you to
buy it of me and remain at home

I
I’ll keep good whisky and I ihink
I can afford to sell it you for 10
cents per drink.” The idea struck
John favorably, Here was a
chance to procure 15 -cent, whisky
lOcentsa drink and please his
wife at the same time. His wife
laid in a stock of good “booze, y y
and John’s patronage was im¬
mense. The profits mounted up¬
ward rapidly and the thrifty wife
soon found that she was accumu¬
lating quite a bit of good money
that had gone out of the family
heretofore.
Finally John began to question
her concerning the profits and she
was foolish enough to tell him
how much she had made. There¬
upon John demanded half of the
profits, which she promptly and
correctly refused to turn over.
John was aa mad as wet hen, went
to the State’s attorney and swore
out a warrant against his wife for
running a “blind pig. »»
The poor woman was hauled
into court and the facts placed be¬
fore the judge. I am pleas ;d to
to state that “his honor” scored
the scoundrel unmercifully, com¬
mended the woman in high terms
and dismissed the case.
This is no “fairytale” and was
vouched f jr to me by some of Far¬
go’s most reputable citizens,
Isn’t that a corker? Can you
beat it in good old South Carolina?

Early Gubernatorial Talk.
The B irnsville Gazette put fire
to the gubernatorial political pot
last week by printing the follow
mg:
I t It is freely talked in the state
that Hon. Thotnos W. Hardwick,
who spoke at Gordon Institute
commencement last week, is slat¬
ed 11s the successor of Hoke Smith
as Governor of Georgia, It is
said that the matter is tacitly
agreed upon among certain of the
leaders of the present regime.
It is further stated, however, that
this arrangement does not suit
some of the other ambitious lead¬
ers among the reformers and when
the time come 3 there is going to
be a warm time of it.”
Reproducing this, the Savannah
Press says:
j i l l'his contest may not arise
until four years from now unless
Hoke Smith runs for the senate at
the end of his first term. •Con¬
gressman Hardwick may find him¬
self confronted bv Mr. Watson,
Judge Miller or Judge Aiken in
the latter event. There is no real
prediction as to what may hap¬
