admitted to the practice of law,

duties devolving upon them in an
able and impartial manner.
The city court was created by
an act of the last legislature, Rep¬
resentative F. D. Ballard having
introduced a bill to abolish the
county court of Newton and tstab
lisli this new court in its stead.
Judge Dicksmi was Judge of the
county court, having held the po

sixteen years,

A Card of Thanks.
The battle is over, we have lost,
hut I want to thank my loyal
friends for thnir splendid support,
jjy heart is cheered by their coil
fidence.
To the people of Newton county,
I desire to say, I am the same
orphan boy that enlisted in the
Cimfederate army before he was
fifteen years of age, and at the age
of sixteen, when the old men and
boys were ordered out to meet
Sherman’s invasion, a Lieutenant
of State troops, and carne home
ragged and hungry when the war
was over, to take his place with
the poverty stricken people of his
State.
I tried to do my duty then, ex¬
pect to in the future.
I bow to the will of the people,
and if the time ever comes when
my services are needed in defense
of truth ami justice, I will be
found in the ranks doing ray best
to uphold the good name of our
county.
I have no higher ambition than
to do my duty as a citizen.
I bear no malice toward any,
and the latch string of my home
hangs on the outside to my friends.
I slandered no one in the cam¬
paign. I thought a judge ought
to be selected by the free will of
the voter, without pledges of any
kind.
I expect to Jive in the future as
in the past, in Newton county, and
will do all in my power to help
keep the county in the front ranks
of progress and prosperity. May
G"d help the old county, and peace
and good will always prevail.
1 am still a .Slate prohibitionist
and in favor of good government;
if we save the boys we save the
nation. Yours truly.

lmentary to Dr. J. E. Dickey
who preached there on the first
Sunday in September:
Dr. Dickey, President of Rtn
ory College, Georgia, preached at
the M. L. Church, South, on last
Sunday morning and gave eon
gregation a treat that will lung
t>e remembered by our people.
His text was Ps. 51. 10, and his
theme, inward inspection as com
pari-d with outward glamour. The
doctor is a learned and gifted man,
and we hope it will not be the last
time our people wiilhear him. He
atui his wife were visiting Mr.
and Mrs. Clark, from Covington,
Ga., and we know that they en¬
joyed the hospitality of t fnwe
good people who visit Murchead
City every summer. ) >
