Stockholders Meeting.
The first annual meeting of the
stockholders of The First
Bank of Covington has been called
for luesday, January 14th, at
which time the officers of this new
bank will be elected lor 1908.
Hon. S. R. Ellington
Ha9 been chosen to fill th ? unex
pired terra of Hon. J. M. Mitcham
on the County Board of Education.
Mr. Ellington is one of Newton’s
foremost planters, and will make
a valuable member of the board.
Mr. Ellington has done much to¬
ward the educational advancement
of Newton county.
Union Services at
Methodist Church.
Union services were held at th**
Methodist church Thursday night
to welcome the new pastor, Rev.
H M. Quillian. Speeches were
made by Revs. John B.
E. R. Pendleton and Mayor S. P.
Thompson. Quite a number of
members of the different churches
were present to welcome the new
pastor and his family to our city.

Lodge, No. 375, Masons, held in
their hall at Snapping Shoals on

the city Saturday for the pur
pose of examining the books and
accounts of The First National
Bank of Covington. His report
was more than favorable to thoee
interested and he spoke in the
highest terms of the efficient trau
agement. He said few banks of
the same age made a more favora¬
ble showing, and complimented it
on its fine condition.
Mayor Thompson’s
Christmas Matinee.
Hon S P Thompson, newly elect¬
ed mayor of Covington, was kept
quite busy during his first week’s
administration. Thursday after
Christmas Mayor Thompson put
the law breakers on notice that he
was going to have things run right
and keep good order in the city by
putting heavy fines and sentences
on the first fourteen of the colored
population that came before him.
Here’s the way he wound up that
day’s business:
Jim Thornton, charged with
drunkenness, $2) and cost; Will

Bagby, drunk, $10 and coat; ]no

new firm proposes to conduct

general retail drygoods busine>s,
with a capital stock of sixteen
thousand dollars and is conip sed
of some of the city’s enterprising
business men, Messrs. T C Swann,
J H Porter, T. J. Harwell and Mrs.
S E Swanu.

Swann-Davis Co. store room on
south side of the squate.

the new firm, and it goes without

is assured.

Judge Whaley of the City Court.
J udge Whaley, of the City Court,
did not stop the wh.els of justice
during Christmas week. On Fri¬
day John Jackson, colored, appear¬
ed before him and plead guilty to
larceny from the house. It seems
that Jackt-oi is a loafing negto,
coming here from parts unknown.
On Christmas eve a negro man
purchased a coat from W. Cohen,
and afterwards went into th^ store
of Mr. U. M. Dial to make a par¬
chaser Jackfon, seeing that lie
1 ad laid his package on the coun¬
ter and was looking at something
else, proceeded to take it himsvlf.
He wore it up town the next day
and was caught. Judge Whaley
gave him eight months on the
county gang without a fine and
told him in that lie wanted a free
suit he thought he would let the
county^la.uikh him one
