Corporal Punishment Children.! ]
Brutalizes
’
WILLIAM H. MAXWELL, Superintendent of Schools. New York City. ^
jj I AM poral sorry punishment to see myself in the quoted schools, in the papers as favoring cor op-j - 5
as I am unequivocally
^ % posed to corporal punishment. In the first place, it has a*
tendency to BRUTALIZE THE CHILDREN AND BRU-i
TALIZE THOSE *
WHO ADMINISTER THE PUNISHMENT. :
Then, again, the teacher loses dignity, and that has a deteriorating!
effect upon the children. It has the tendency to make the principal of!
a school the general flogger of that school. It may have been all right!
in 18G4, but it would hardly do now. I
If the principal were to attend to the flogging of those who infract
the school discipline he would have no time for pedagogical duties. l
