Play Ball!
This is the t>me of year when
the “young man’s fancy lightly
turns to thoughts of love,” the
breezes are laden with the frag¬
rance of the honeysuckle, and the
“fans are getting anxious to wit¬
ness a good base ball game.
Covington is one of the best base
ball towns m Middle G eorgia, we
have a number of excellent players
here and with a little effort by the
admirers of the great National
game, the people of this city could
witness some fine ball games this
Summer.
The Enterprise suggests that the
lovers of this great game in Cov¬
ington call a meeting for next week,
select a team, elect a manager, and
arrange for at least two games at
home each week.

COL. LIVINGSTON’S
PRESENT CAMPAIGN
Attracts Attention, Says Ben H.
Sullivan, Our Special Corres
spondent at Washing¬
ton City.
The Members of Congress with¬
out distinction of party or locality
have been very muah interested
in the campaign going on in the
Fifth District of Georgia, between
Livingston and Mayson. Perhaps
there is not one of the many mem¬
bers of the House and Senate but
that regret the opposition display¬
ed against him in his home Dis¬
trict. They think it very strange
that now, when it is apparent, al¬
most a certainty, that the Demo¬
crats will be in possession of the
next House, with Livingston
ranking Democrat of the Approp
lations Committee, and would be
its Chairman, if left in the House;
that this opposition should come
at this time. They cannot under¬
stand why the people of Georgia
and the South would dare to throw
away such an opportunity.
The interesting correspondence in
the papers in regardto some decla¬
ration of his, said by Mayson and
his friends to be antagonistic to
the “franchise clause”, passed by
the last Georgia Legislature, has
engaged the attention of everybody
this week in Washington. It
would seem from the wtrde cor
respondece that Mr. Mayson and
.
. his friends made a great mistake
when they charged upon Livings
ton such a dKclarat’on. The peo- v
pie here are compelled to believe
the statement of those men from
Fairbarn Georgia, headed by the
Mayor, who under oath stated
that he did not use such language,
j This should prove as it, does Mr.
Mayson as a “ward politciun”, not
careful with his facts; which in the
opinion of the better class of peo
j pie in Washington decreases his
: rating as a fit Representative of
i tho great District of Atlanta.
j Usually Congressmen in their
campaigns do not deal in that kind
of politics and it lowers any man
in the estimation of both the House
and Senate who engages in it.

Who Aie the Liquor Interests
Supporting for Governor?
Editor Enterprise: Believing
that it is rime for some one to
speak out, I have determined to
pen these Uw thoughts to those
readeis of The Enterprise, who be¬
lieve in a high standard of morula
and have a deep interest in the
welfare of our county and state
and who f)eli;ve that prohibition
is a promoter ot the same. '
W hether we wish to make pro¬
hibition an issue in the election of
our officers or not, those who op.
pose prohibition are doing so, and
are voting almost solidly tor men
wtio will encourage and support a
change in the prohibition law of
Georgia And we, who favor and
support the present law, must fight
with every man on duty if victory
will lie ours.
Of course, our election is over
in Newton corn tv ; bur, it is not
in many counties; and then there
is the election for state officers.
Newton county is strong lor pro
hibitioo, and has chosen a man for
Representative who will as a mat
ter of course defend the best inter¬
est of his county and state.
But, my friends, let us not go to
sleep on dutv. One of the men
who has offered himself to the
voters of Georgia for governor, has
inserted in his platform u clause
stating that he will sign a pill pro¬
viding for any change in the pres¬
ent prohibition law. He has shown
posed to the so-called rairai re
lorm. Hi. p:..form
as to get the entire vote ot the
railroad ring and whiskey vate
combined, togelker with that fl rat
ing population who have no con
victiousstrong enough to influence
them *ither way; also th se who
might favor him for persoual rea
sons or oppose bis opponent for
personal differences. These forces
combined are going to make a
strong showing, and they are mak¬
ing oue of the hardest tights they
have ever made. They are organ¬
ized with capital to back them,
and who knows the result?
Friends, if they are successful
they will have destroyed the work
of years, and it will take a long
time to regain the ground that is
ours at present. On the other
hand, if we win the fight again,
we can rest assured that victory
will ever be ours.
Let every man who favors pro¬
hibition lealize that he has a great
responsibility resting upon him,
and talk for, work for, and vote
for the man who promises to pro¬
tect the prohibition law, unless it
be charged by its friends.
We need to realize the truthful¬
ness of tb3 saying that in “unity
there is strength,” and with one
great concentrated effort, put our
