THE RAILROADS AND
THE FARMERS’ UNION.
We wish to call the attention of the members of the Farmers 1
^ n!0pi particularly and of all fair minded men to two separate at
tacks being made by the Railroads upon Governor Smith that are
unfair, untrue and tricky.
Here they are:
'"* *“ ** * U> 1
th tHC ht char S^ an With y< ti are fighting Smith
31 ' r m, ^ ‘ him U P being th« originator of
c prcscnt reduced passenger fares upon the railroads and say that
these rates are ruinous to them. Why, so clean a man as the
Railroad Agent at Covington, we are told, brought his books to a
Brown meeting the other night, and vehemently attacked Hoke
Smith for the falling off in the passenger rece pts on account of
the new rates.
Candidly and fairly, is net this attack more an attack of the
railroads against the Farmers’ Union than it is against Hoke Smith?
Ain f this shipping Hoke Smith over the shoulders of the men of
the Farmers’ Union? Yes it is, and it is unfair and deceptive
jf, re result ol a petition brought by the Farmers' Union to
Georgia Rawoad Commission to make the railroads give re
j duced fares. The Farmers' Union hired Hon. Hooper Alexander, j
eminent lawyer of Atlanta, paid him as a fee $250 and brought
their petition to the Railroad Commission, before Hoke Smith was
ever elected, and when Joe Brown was on the Railroad Com,mis

1 ar -’**^rs e fiion pc'.Ton o:d it. Trite, Hoke Srniirt aided them all
he could, but HE did not start it—the Farmers’ Union started it.
When that petition came before the Railroad Commission Joe l
Brown, as a E the l0 f o t a f am5t thc
n Union a otner th , two members over
ruled Joe. And yet the railroads are shrewdly saying not a word
about the Farmers' Union; they are laying it a!! cn Hoke Smith.
arc asking the voters of the Farmers’ Union to vote against
Hoke for standing up to the." r petition,
Men, was t XT. e UL, armers’ Union wrong then, nd will they be
tricked into voti C. g «3 gainst Hoke Smith now, be t; use he '-tood up
to them then? No! Tne sturdy o‘d farmer is too wise to be
caught by a tnck !:kc this.
2. Then the raailraads H us that because of the Hoke Smith
laws they have been forced to’withdraw their deposits from the

THIS IS NO NEW LAW, it is (he same it was FIFTY YEARS AGO,
and has never been touched by Hoke Smith or his administration.
